Etihad J (SYD-LHR-SYD)

About 40 mins prior to the flight we made our way to the gate and jumped on the plane: something looked different. The seating wasn't blue: it was brown. I wasn't too sure if it is the "new" J product, or the "old" J product: does anyone know? Whatever it was, I preferred it. The IFE was closer to my face, so this instantly made it feel bigger. There was room to put stuff and a cavity in the armrest that allowed me to store my watch / phone / wallet.

The blue is the older product.

I flew on it back in May 2009 and loved it, the seat was slightly narrower than I would have preferred (which I believe has been corrected in V2.0, but aside from that and the storage issue you raised, I couldn't fault the product or service offering at all, staff were fantastic.

Awesome - I may consider them again if they retrofit all of their aircraft with the newer interior. It felt much more roomier.

I guess my expectations had been skewed by a few older TR's which I believe were EY's "golden years" - perhaps their success has been their downfall in the service area?

I believe they are retrofitting, I thought on SYD and LON legs they'd def. be operating the new J product by now.

I'll see if I can confirm if they're retrofitting.

p.s. Know what you mean about Emirates Palace, that place is amazing, had a great meal there when I was in AUH.

Interesting you say it was like a J cabin with PE service.

My experience with QF to HKG last year was PE with J service (and the FA even brought us a nice wine from F!)

Conclusion from that is that the cabin doesn't make the flight, it's the service. Sure a flat bed is nice (and as far as I'm concerned on a long haul night-time flight, necessary) but it's the service you really remember.

Thats a good point. The AUH-LHR flight was great (where we had the wonderful FA): perhaps getting good service from FA's makes it easier to overlook a less than stellar product?

Forgotten Observations!

EY Observation #8. Amenity Kits. I was expecting a WOW amenity kit, but on the flights where the amenity kits were actually distributed (SYD-AUH / AUH-SYD) the contents included:

- Socks
- Toothbrush/Toothpaste
- Earplugs
- Eye mask
- Lip Balm*
- Moisturiser*

On the AUH-LHR-AUH flights, if asked for a amenity kit you received a "lite" version which did not include items marked as *

Slightly disappointing!

EY Observation #9. Voss Water. No such thing exists anymore. The water is Etihad branded water in flimsy plastic bottles.

Did someone say "Cost cutting"?

Interesting to read. I will be posting a report on our Etihad J flight after we get home in a few weeks. We will have tried 3 different J classes. We are all different and Mrs Rb preferred quite a few things about our VS flight over the QF.
Lip balm, moisturiser & water bottles are things I will now look out for:)

EY Observation #10 - Headphones. The J headphones are the same as what is provided in Y e.g. not noise cancelling. I believe the noise cancelling headphones are in F only. Also, the headphone jack in 2 out of 4 flights needed delicate "positioning" for it to not cut out (e.g. the plug holes were faulty)... slightly irritating to say the least...

Excellent report and as someone said "its the service that is remembered" --not the price lol! I was thinking of going to Ireland with Etihad J next year but now I will wait till Em starts its new flights to Ireland in Jan 12 ! again thank you so much for a great report !

Thank you!

Some months have passed since this report, and I *think* that EY are going through a refurb of their aircraft, therefore you could strike it lucky and get the new "brown" J config. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the service is just as poor, so it's really up to you and what you consider a priority. If it's cheap / on sale I might consider it again, but as a whole package I would probably look elsewhere.

(I actually forgot I wrote this TR so it was good having another read!)

Excellent TR !!

I was considering EY after a friend gave me a brief of their service but the factors described by you (FA attitude, Service level, Meals, Lounge in AUH) is too much of a gamble for me. I was looking at SYD-xx_-FRA...

Seems like it's back to the drawing board for me. The status credits and miles for Velocity would have been very nice but the cost for them is just too high if I consider the downsides of EY.

I would have asked if you can't be on of the 'unlucky' ones and get the rebooking onto CX!

The 'Limo' is a disgrace to even be titled like that. Oh well, it seems like you enjoyed your destinations so that's the main thing!

Cheers
S. :)

Rather than write a new trip report (because A I and too lazy, and B I have no photos) I thought I would hijack haydensydney's excellent TR an add a few observations from my recent trip.

I booked a VA codeshare on EY in order to help maintain platinum status with VA/DJ following the status match. It was booked prior to Christmas 2011 for travel in March 2012. I really didn't know what to expect and haydnesydney's TR was my first point of reference.

Seat selection was done over the phone, with reference to seat guru, and proved excellent on the MEL-AUH leg, but not so good on the AUH-LHR leg. I really don't know what to make of the layout in the J cabin on EY's A340's. I liken the cabin to Michelle Butterly, currently starring in the very low comedy Benidorm in the UK, from some angles she is very attractive and then a change of camera angle and not so much.

The seats are relatively narrow and if I was a couple of inches taller would be a tight squeeze. (I'm 5ft 11 in in old money - get a calculator kids!!) The A and K seats suit me, there is a real sense of privacy that I find lacking in the other seats. I was in an old fit out on both legs and as haydensydney pointed out there is little in the way of storage around the seat. The seat itself has good movement, including delivering you right up to the tray table for meals. I also had no problems sleeping on either leg so comfort was OK. without being excellent.

The Koru Lounge at MEL was rammed with folk and whilst I don't believe the QF F Lounge makes or breaks a trip for me I have to say I did miss it. The lounge in AUH was rammed too and whilst not bad is nowhere near as good as the QF/BA First lounges I am used too. Maybe familiarity makes things a little better for me when I travel.

The food on the flights was not bad at all and I found the dine when you are ready approach really good. The old refit looked tired and if I am brutally honest it looked like the colour scheme had been put together by someone who is colour blind.

I think the big variance from haydensydney's experience was service. Maybe EY has taken note of previous concerns but I have to say that the service was very good. The FA's were very attentive throughout the flights. Drinks orders were taken whilst we were leaving the terminal and delivered promptly after the seat belt sign had been extinguished.

I usually travel to the UK with QF mainly, or BA , and I missed online seat selection, the F lounges, familiarity of SIN/BKK/HKG and the service normally received.

Will I fly EY again? Probably, well certainly actually as I already have a trip booked for later in the year, I'd certainly look to help maintain my DJ/VA status by flying to the UK once a year.

I thought The EY lounge at LHR T4 was very good. An improvement on the BA/QF F lounge at T3. After the initial shock of finding myself in the ScaryTeam terminal I was pleasantly surprised by the EY combined F/J lounge. Attentive service, I was offered spa treatments as soon as I arrived, and staff that kept me in english breakfast tea without being intrusive.

The convenience of the Hitlon at LHR T4, the service and the on board food made my return journey almost agreeable. If you are traveling solo in J you do need to make sure you get an A or K seat - they are that bit more private. I plugged my iPad into the entertainment system and settle back for quite a comfortable journey. Having said that the seats are a little narrow and if you are over six feet tall you won't be stretching out when the seat is in the flat position.

I'll fly EY once are twice a year to help me maintain and go beyond VA/DJ platinum.
