I think he could be on a quick transfer to MEL rmto pick up a gmflight to pilot elsewhere otherwise he would have taken his pilots shirt off and put a civvie shirt on.
((At MEL T1 arr near gate 2/4 there used to be a special dom first class lounge, now I think its pilot rest zone)).
I couldn't see the badge tho, buy his jacket had 3 gold bars.
He was carrying it.
Was Aussie so it's either he is QF or JQ.

Very observant, Pooch.

Ohh that was back in the day, that lounge at Gate 3 domestic!
The QP used to be between gates one and three at MEL Qantas Domestic. ISTR the CL being across the concourse near gate two. But that was perhaps 2½ decades ago ...

OT, but a groan moment (ie we’re all getting old(er)) but that’s how long the current SYD T2 and T3 lounge footprints have been in play. Both piers redeveloped prior to the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Although T3 was a progressive knock down rebuild. T2 tacked on the extra pier, built the new departure checkin area/arrivals area and what are now VA lounges.

What’s in the old AN GW lounge space opposite gate 53? Some terminal maps still show it as a QP (including OW!).

It was a QP for a time, but Qantas closed it (may be) a decade ago.
Exactly, and why I was surprised to see it still shown as a QP on the OW website* 10 years later.

and I went there because I saw it labelled as a QP on another website’s T2 terminal map. I started to wonder if I’d missed something… Maybe it’s been converted into a staff “lounge” also?

*granted that the OW site is not always totally up to date…

Prior to the Olympics, the SYD domestic QP was in the area where gate 16 is now.

They should do a reno and put an internal link between SYD T2 and T3.
Would help/s when doing a mix of JQd and QFd or putting a VAd in a mix of flights to fly to a destination in Aust.

Aha, now I see why that place at MEL QFd gate 2 has that special nook, or room with dark tinted windows.
Saw a F lounge sign there a long time ago, probably when QFd had FJY.
Sign now removed.
Lots of older colleagues on here would remember that time.

I can see two issues.

1 QF really wants to keep a demarcation between itself and JQ
2. IIRC the terminal space are leased from SACL? And in the T2 case of course it's not just JQ but of course also VA and ZL.

I checked at QF signed a 10 year least on T3 in 2015 which replaced a 30 year deal struck in 1989

In line with current operations, Qantas will retain exclusive use of Terminal 3 and will continue to manage most of the terminal on behalf of Sydney Airport until 30 June 2019.

After that time, Qantas will retain priority usage to Terminal 3 through to 30 June 2025. Priority usage includes a majority of the terminal’s gates, check-in and baggage facilities.

Except, if they connected and properly refurbed the in between bits, that would open more gates for QF, plus they could cheekily expand into the JQ gates…

No one of them wants to pay for it.
They don't, but look at SIN Changi, they just do what is needed.
Bulldoze and do it, no ifs, no buts.
We are already gaving to pay 2 sets of dom sec charges if we have to transit at SYD.
One charge at home airport, another at SYD, if we have to change from T3 to T2 for what ever reason.

Will keep quiet on this one now.

"They" would have to be SACL under request.

While gates at T3 can be an ussue at peak no question, dragging gate capacity from JQ would not be ideal as they want JQ to hrow too, and doubt SACL would want them trying to muscle in on other use gates - not to mention the transfer time for flights potentially out of T2.

Not sure there is a "good" solution here bat impact of WSI and maybe moving some JQ capacity out there - but that will cause other issues potentially a la NRT/HND.

SYD is dsap bang inner sydney so there is not a lot of room to play with. SIN had a little more (not much I guess) room to play with. No gov would moot SUD expansion.. hence WSI.

If that's the case, why when one goes to the QF website and searches flights do JQ flights pop-up everywhere?
Fair point.

I guess there's two things at play. Of course QF owns JQ, so they want to push pax there when it makes sense from a sales point of view.

However, since JQ mostly operates in a LCCish bubble - no interlining or online connections to other airlines etc, then there is still that "line" between the two. Eg on QF flights the "If you're connecting to a jetstar flight, collect your bags and check in with them"

Would it preclude wanting an airside connection from T3-T2 at SYD? Probably not, but I doubt it would be high on the agenda. Specially given that, bar HLO, connections between the two will involve re checking in anyway. Sure if HLO, it would be super handy.
