Expiring Krisflyer Miles

I (as will undoubtedly many others) have a raft of Krisflyer points expiring over the next 12 months. They had been earmarked for a trip last April but of course that was cancelled. It appears that Krisflyer has suspended transfers to Velocity since April 2020.

What does everyone think of the chances of Krisflyer reinstating Velocity points transfers soon?

I am unlikely to travel in the next 36 months. Is there anything else I can spend the points on apart from Krisshop?

I highly doubt that transfers to Velocity will ever come back. SQ no longer has a stake in VA like they used to.

You can use your miles for domestic VA flights or hotels.

How do you use KF points for local VA flights?

Mrsdrron's KF points were to expire in Feb 2020 so in January we booked award flights to SIN and BKK using those points.When those flights were cancelled KF said they would not expire in at least the next 6 months.We have now booked that trip for August this year and hopefully if cancelled can reschedule again.

have a raft of points expiry before july, i got the 6month extended expiry which helps,
given the situation in australia, and personally i am finding it impossible to make plans for 2021., even though I had big plans for long haul mid 2020

what advice do you guys have?
my only bright idea is to book a flight for in 12 months just before expiry date, and then pay the $50 USD (or whatever it is) when youve found the flight you want

So mrsdron's 3000 points that would have expired in February but put back in her account in August will expire in July.

I've just cancelled my trip to HK/China in April. A whole tons of points came back to my account. I asked the CSR my point expiry, and she said it would be Feb 2022.

I am now really hoping the the covid issue will improve dramatically as i have like 900K points to burn ..... I am hoping I can burn them all to go to say Europe next year (4 people).

The problem is that there will be a lot of people having the same problem as me and it means that seats will be very hard to get ....

I wouldn't be that concerned, there are a lot of us who have larger than expected or wanted KF points balances. My searching of rewards would suggest that SQ are releasing seats along similar lines of availability to pre Covid.

Well those 900k points was as a result of me moving all my Amex points before devaluation. I think there are a lot of us in the same situation. So I think there will be a lot of fights for flights next year as there will be a large number of us need to burn all those points at the same time!

The amex points devaluation occured in Apr 19, so depending on when you transferred they will be good to use through to Apr 22. Reading your post above as long as you book your flight using points by Feb 22 you can book to around Jan 23. As I suggested not much to worry about.

As painful as it is, I’m playing a quarterly game with SQ where I just keep rebooking or moving flights to exactly 12 months ahead (availability remains good). My theory is that I’ll have a bit of a head start on the mad rush when travel is finally open again. To SQs credit, provided everything fits in with their current rules, they’re very efficient when it comes to moving flights. I’m averaging a few minutes on live chat for each rebooking (would be hours on the phone with Qantas).

Funny thing with one of them is that I actually paid the fee to rebook back in April as I genuinely believed I’d be traveling in February. That booking is now showing some very odd things as the “fee” is sitting in credit since I moved it again to later this year.

I hope I will be able to travel at this time but want some flexibility. The scenario would be to book a flight for September 2022 with points expiring in December 2021. Do I need to extend the points before the December 2021 expiry as an insurance (and a cost) or could they be extended anytime during the six months after they expired even though they would still only be able to be extended until June 2022. The ideal situation would be that if we can’t travel in September 2022, I would than have until June 2022 to pay to extend the points (before cancelling September 2022 flight) and rebook for May/June 2023. So in summary do I need to extend the points before they expire or because I have a flight booked can they be extended anytime in the six months after they expire, noting that the actual expiry date is 6 months from the original expiry date.

Surely you would have to extend the points before Dec 2021. The other method you suggested sounds very risky assuming you can even find a way to make it work.

My points have been extended by Krisflyer in 6 month increments. So I'm doing nothing until this stops. By then we can hopefully book a flight somewhere.

might be slightly offtopic, however, I have some expiring in the next 6 months, have decided to give them to a relative,
whats the best value/way for a rtw for them in J/F? they're well travelled in europe and love it, not so well travelled in asia which thye want to try,

so I guess, itinerary would be like Melb-SG (transit)-EU -EU1-EU2-Asia (thailand/China/Japan)-Mel

given the uncertainty of the world, feb 2021 would be 12months time....

And a fat lot of use that will be..... You have to wonder if some airlines will use this as a way of getting rid of some of the overhanging debt that points represent.

Thankfully there aren't that many airlines with a 'hard' points expiry. Most will extend the entire balance of points with a single eligible activity.

Debt? Possibly... if people want to redeem for hard product, like a toaster. But even that represents an approximate 50% profit margin. Seats themselves are only those which would go unsold anyway.
