Great first post Sharath, welcome to AFF.

Are they actually much use in Melbourne these days? With the automated systems, they don't even have separate crew channels any more, and it's been extremely quick since it came into service.

Only if you have kids or can't use computers.

My partner doesn't have an Australian passport so we both jump in the manual queue. Last time we arrived the cards were a godsend as we landed just after an A380 from China. The immigration queue was back through Duty Free.

Not a drastic difference. Quicker security screening for sure ... then often one gets to keep the card!
Have found the arrival ones more useful. Even though I travel with just carry-on, the exit queues in Melbourne have become very long, and so, the express exit helps a lot.
Sending a few cards across to people who have asked and including DXB transit ones (these are very useful when many flights land).

So, if you have an Australian passport, haven't bred, and are vaguely computer literate, then you'll be right.

They do need more of the inbound machines to be distributed around the terminal. Having them in a couple of spots localises everyone, and creates unnecessary chaos. Being right next to duty free is just silly.

The express passes have their uses.

A Sunday early last Dec, came in to MEL on EK from AKL ~8pm

Queues at machines were ave. 15 deep, even those all the way along the arrival concourse and up near the gates.

Gave up (they used to have them at AKL, no queues there [that was the problem I guess]) and went right and right again for the express queue.

Even though I had to wait for the Aircrew coming past I was through in about 5 minutes.
