So, if you have an Australian passport, haven't bred, and are vaguely computer literate, then you'll be right.
For whatever reason, some e-passports don't work consistently or at all with the machines. Their owners have to get processed manually at the assistance desk(s), though this occasionally enables them to beat the queues.
Airports appear to have cracked down on people letting themselves into the assistance line
