Extra Security Screening

On a recent trip from SYD to LAX, in business class, my travelling companion was subjected to extra security screenings at each check point.
His boarding pas had "SSSS" on it, the only difference from mine. He was apparently "randomly" chosen.
The check in agent mentioned it to him and gave him Express passes for customs etc.

Not complaining about the searches etc but what does the SSSS mean, and is it truly random or is his name on a list somewhere?
