Fake status - buying QF bag tags online

No, they are blank. They only store details if you have swiped them at checkin.
You'd hope so. You wouldn't want bags going BNE-SYD-BKK-LHR-ATH when you were only travelling BNE-SYD this trip. That'd be a disaster.

Actually I don't believe they store any details. Each coaster would have a GUID (globally unique ID number). When you check-in, that number becomes associated with you for that flight. So in other words, just used to map that tag to your details that are stored with QF, but not on the actual tag.

It's no different to bags going missing with paper tags is it?

Here is the blurb from the QF site

Permanent Bag Tags - Q Bag Tags
Permanent Bag Tags – Q Bag Tags
The Q Bag Tag is a permanent electronic bag tag designed to facilitate a faster and easier baggage check-in at domestic airports.*

There's no longer a need to attach a temporary bag tag each time you fly domestically - just drop your bags and go.

What's more, if you check-in online or with your mobile before you arrive at the airport, you'll be able to go directly to the Bag Drop.

With a sleek design by Marc Newson, each tag contains world-first technology that synchronises your details on your boarding pass or Qantas card with your baggage.

Luggage tag are worthless, don't get anyone who pays money for them. The plastic cards on the other had are quite valuable. Can't remember the last time I've been asked to scan my card when entering J lounges in Australia. One can potentially buy WP/P1 cards and use them to enter lounges even when flying on cheap JQ fare...

The paper tag would have BNE-SYD and not details of the previous trip BNE-SYD-BKK_LHR-ATH. But if they don't store details then that is OK. Think I had better sell my Platinum tags as I hardly ever use them. Daughter's school fees are not that cheap. ;)

Which isn't to say QF didn't keep track of which RFID was issued to which customer originally, even though the information isn't used for baggage tracking.

My goodness , she's a clever one, at school already! :-)

Had mine scanned at the entrance to the BNE J lounge twice in the last couple of weeks. Maybe I don't look honest

Clearly I have the same problem. I am always having to have mine scanned. I can't remember the last time it wasn't. I posted about this a few weeks ago. Yet MrP never has. I just wonder if it's a female thing then?

Less CL and QP, I have all the free tier colours and they are distributed across various bits of luggage. As I am too lazy to change them, depending which luggage is used by MrsM, MissM or Myself we can all range from PS to WP1.

Wow, that much?!

Suddenly I have an idea how to fund my next F trip :p

I like the thinking

Haha!! Only my legitimately earned white coaster on the carry on :p

Ha Ha, That's the way to go..!

Mainly cause the Ramp boys loading your bags don't neccesarily give a flying hoot if ur P1 or not, they we're prolly mid xbox game when flightload order came thru for ur flight.

But the CSM and FA,s will indeed note ur Coaster whilst embarking where possible, whether or not u still (though u indeed do) hold the status, as a matter of Service and loyalty recognition.

A previous P1 is still in their eyes, worthy of note, as for all they know, you may be a mere 5sc from regaining....

...basically it is Risk Management on their part to consider the Coaster.

I thought i read an AUSBT article way back that mentioned that the RFID / barcode number was linked in the QF system to the original recipient. Not for bag tracking purposes. The previous comments around no personal info are correct. The purpose of recording recipient to barcode was a "If lost please return to" fallback incase a bag or tag ever turned up not as part of a travelling pax.

Priority luggage isnt done well anyway so if pax are buying them under the illusion its going to help there they will be disappointed. On board recognition well perhaps but thats also hit and miss as it is anyway for those who hold status.

My understanding is that when you check your bag in the system reads your details (flight, name etc) and links that to the tag.

White looks the cheapest - so why anyone would bother is beyond me.

I used to use them but don't bother anymore. Partly just unnecessary and partly after twice going through CNS and the agents specifically still put the paper tags on, with the second one telling me too many bags got lost so they do not use. This was a few years ago, to be fair.
