Oh, to turn this around a bit ... I dropped into a chemist this arvo to ask about flu shots. And the shop attendant looked at me and said "I know you. Weren't you on TV last night?" I had to admit I was - but I missed it as I got home late. (Interview about a local issue).

Years ago (1996 or 97) I stood next to Mel B (Scary Spice) at LHR. In those days, I don't know what its like now domestic bags from various flights were mixed on to one or two baggage carousels. I had been away for Christmas there were lots of people waiting for bags but there was a gap next to one lady who was there with a guy the size of a rugby player. I just went and stood next to them. They didn't say anything. It was only afterwards when she had collected her bags and was walking away that I heard people saying "do you know who that was?".

The problem is I don't watch TV, not interested in sport or music really so I never recognise people. For a while I used to work in Knightsbridge and often with a friend we would go to Harrods at lunch time. Every so often a friend would say "look over there" and there would be some footballer who I had no idea who he was.

(I did see Roger Moore, Paul McCartney, Clive James, and the Beckhams in Harrods. At least I recognised them!)

Many years ago I (literally) bumped into Sam Neill in a Qantas Pub. Small spillage of his wine and a red face for me, but spent a really nice couple of minutes chatting with him. A gentleman, indeed.

Have also sat across from Ross Kemp in the KF lounge - looks exactly like himself (go figure).

Mark Webber (twice). Once before he got into F1, but after he flipped the Le Mans Mercedes on the Mulsanne straight - described it brilliantly for me on a walk from our SYD-MEL plan to the carousels (incidentally, I sat a few seats away from him and he spent the entire flight with his head resting on the seatback in front of him - hectic schedule I imagine).
I then ran into him in the SK Business Lounge departing for SYD after a Singapore/Malaysia holiday with all 3 of our kids - the kids were gobsmacked (yes, they knew who he was). This was a year or two after he quit Red Bull.

On the flip side - on the 600 or so other trips I've taken, I've met more nobodies who've been wonderful in one way or another. Some people just leave you feeling a little more enriched by their existence (no I have not been drinking.......but good idea!).

When it's more favourable to hang out with your former sparring partners or business leaders that hate you for policies you enacted that hurt their fortunes rather than the rest of the population, that probably tells you all you need to know about the life of an ex-PM.

My boss sat across from Kylie Minogue (on Qantas of course) on a domestic trip - J class, a few weeks ago apparently she was very lovely to all and everyone who recognised her despite very large sunnies and a hat.
