Re: [fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in C < $800

I posted below on FT to see if anyone else is in the same situation, given there were quite a few tickets were sold however it is;

Something strange or interesting has happened to my booking. It is a Vayama/KE ticket where on 5/17 I offered reinstatement which I responded with an affirmitive. Everything appears in order until today 5/22 when I check online that the TG Y RGN-BKK and TG Y BKK-RGN legs have fallen off, from both TG's website and Vayama's My Trip/Bookings. Now, I don't mind not starting and ending in BKK
wink.gif
as long as the ticket is in order. I should just wait and see what happens.

Might just sit tight for 48 hours and then email them to see if the ticket is order. At the end of the day, its a KE ticket with BKK-ICN-LAX-ICN-BKK sectors on KE metal so by dropping the TG sectors it might just save them a few dollars and I won't mind either ;)

I'm not expecting the official e-visa to be up and running in time for my departure (late June). More concerning is that the website for the Myanmar embassy in Canberra has been offline for some time: myanmarembassycanberra.info Will ring them tomorrow. In the meantime, does anyone have copies of the forms required by the embassy in Canberra, or do I need to ask them to email them to me?

All my flights are reinstated now. Departure is in 1 week, 1st June. :)

My return is on the B777 but I will try to change it to the A380 when I'm in LAX.

Good luck throughout.

It's certainly been an epic exercise, particularly on FT.

A member on Flyertalk has just posted the following with respect to visa on arrival:

Myanmar will re-grant visa-on- arrival starting June 1, aimed at facilitating foreign travelers and promoting the number of tourists arrival in the country, official sources said Monday.

The visa-on-arrival will be issued to those visiting Myanmar on business, transit and as a tourist. Such visa will be granted to travelers from 27 countries including nine other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including Australia, Britain, China, Japan and the United States.

I would not be relying on that for travel anytime soon, given the flux such matters seem to be in for the past few years.

For those who are flying to Yangon I've found a very good price at Traders Hotel, a Shangri-La brand hotel that is one of the better establishments in Yangon. Octopus Travel in the UK has Traders Club rooms (their executive lounge level) for $129 for 1 person or $140 for 2 people. Every other website is charging around $235 best available rate or $325 for a club room. Seems to be around a 18 day cancellation policy, so not great, but not fully unchangeable either. Availability most days. This appears to be a 40% off sale octopus is having at the moment that ends on the 1st June. Other Yangon hotels are available.

Sounds very good. Unfortunately I can't replicate it for my travel in January.

I've had another play around with dates and can only get availability at Traders until the end of July. I can get both the Chatrium and Sedona (both 4 star) consistently at $160-180 until the end of October, and then the Sedona at $180 until December 26th, but nothing at all is loaded for the new year.

More information posted overnight on a new visa process (posts 42566 and 4261).

A transit visa is now available for USD20 for 24 hours. However, it's not clear as to whether or not you can actually leave the airport with one of these visas.

An entry visa (what other type of visa is there?) will now be available for USD40 but apparently this is for people attending meetings, workshops and events. How this differs from a business visa at USD50 I don't know.

Finally, it seems a regular 'tourist visa' is still required for, well, tourists and the process for applying for one hasn't changed. Myanmar Visa Online Service - Visa On Arrival and eVisa Travel Information on Burma seems to be the preferred option with a five or so day turnaround for, I think, USD70.

Perhaps someone can catch a positioning flight with Bob during the week...

FOREIGN Minister Bob Carr plans to meet with Burma's reformist President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi during a visit there next week.
Senator Carr has revealed he will spend three days in the troubled South-East Asian nation as it continues with its much-celebrated democratic reform push.
"It's a good opportunity to assess Burma's progress towards democratic reform," Senator Carr told a Senate estimates hearing on Wednesday.
"And to do what I can to encourage further progress on human rights and the resolution of ethnic conflict."
Senator Carr says he hopes to meet with both the president and Ms Suu Kyi - who this week travelled outside Burma for the first time in two decades - but the meetings have not yet been confirmed.

http://www.mip.gov.mm/visaonarrival/

It seems that Visa on Arrival in both Transit and 'Entry' (whatever than means) have been officially announced by the Burmese Government.

In any other country, forms on a .gov website would indicate legitimacy, but like everything else when it comes to Burma, I'd probably take it with a grain of salt. I'm heading to Rangoon next Saturday, so i'll report back if I can see anything that would indicate Visa on Arrival is actually in effect.

(so is it safe to call airlines (eg SQ) that have ticketed the ex RGN fares yet?) ... (to get seat allocations or to book-a-cook etc?) ...

A few here have already rung SQ for seat allocations and Book The Cook choices back in April, myself included  My flights for October, just checked my e-ticket again, is still showing all confirmed so everything looks in order :)

Is this 'book the cook' thing just for F or is J included too?

Where are you checking your e-ticket? I can see my flights on my Krisflyer account but cannot access them/manage the booking (limitation of the website apparently). Nor can I pull them up on VirtuallyThere.

I'm departing in ten days. I received a single entry visa via the Myanmar Embassy in Canberra last week, took twenty days since posting it from Melbourne. For my return leg I am throwing up between using the new visa on arrival (My second visit is less than 24 hours, but includes an overnight, so will I qualify for a transit visa?) or using the pre-arranged visa on arrival myanmarvisa.com, which will cost more but should still work if the government pulls their visa on arrival at short notice.
