Finnair Adopting Avios in 2024

I can see a big devaluation coming in all Avios airline user's futures.... this big consolidation is not necessarily a good thing. Strike while the iron is hot, though.

Agree, it'll allow the airlines to stop a lot of the points arbitrage that currently goes on between programs.

The date that Finnair will switch over to Avios has been announced as 9 March 2024, with an IT upgrade happening in the background between 8-11 March.

Nice. Will be great to see the Avios cartel grow even bigger in the coming years. Who’s next, UX perhaps?

All the members of IAG use it, as well as a major airline stake holder of IAG.
It appears they are now working through non IAG members of the joint venture.
They are changing Avios into a spend based earn model, so maybe AA will join next.

Some Q&A from Finnair

The status/revenue-based Tier Points and ability to top up your Tier Points using Avios are interesting. Once you got to Platinum you could probably requalify with one AY Aus-Eu J trip and 120000 Avios

Not sure how the LTP (3.3M tier points which is equivalent to EUR370k spend for a WP) stacks up against BA or QF

3,300,000 TP?! BA lifetime Gold is 35,000 TP. BA GGLfL is a little more, but both are OWE.
Yes but a new AY TP is a fair bit easier to earn than a BA one

Will look to do some proper sums but I'm guessing LTP at least similar in achievability to BA but much easier than QF

Can't transfer between programs yet, but might be a few sweet spots in the interim period once it is available.

The other day linked my FinnairPlus & BA Executive Club accounts and transferred some avios from Finnair over to BA.
Already have my QR Privilege & BA accounts linked.
Finnair balance updated straight away along with balance showing on BA dashboard.
In BA the avios balance on the screen when going to 'Book flight with avios' only showed the updated balance after logging out and back in .

Is there a way I can check award availability apart from Finnair website or seat.aero?

I am looking at BKK-HEL in September but can see zero seats.
According to customer agent on Finnair website chat business seats are 125K Avios comparing to Qatar's 180K.

Using the QF multi city flights search there appears to be better than expected availability right through September if searching for a single seat. First half of September shows J seats on the 3rd, 7-9th, 12th, 14th & 15th. QF shouldn't have better availability than AY website???

I was searching that route this morning and lots of availability but only on certain days.
