Re: Have I Over-Analysed This Enough? Comments/Advice on My Plan Welcome.

I did the HEL transfer five weeks ago and 50 mins is plenty.and I've done it plenty of times as it ismy preferred way in the EU. It is a five minute walk (including immigration) between gates. In fact last time I had to go through immigration three times as I left my iPad on the Non-Schengen side of the terminal and had to go back immigration again to retrieve it.

Immigration are somewhat humourless (especially when they are big hulking Nordic blondes to begin with). But when I'm literally the only person in line, I'm quiet happy to deal with it!!! They however got a chuckle at my iPad saga ;-)

So if I had to go in and out and in again, you have nothing to worry about!

If you have a longish connection on the way back I suggest going into HEL to have a looksie around as well. They even have a pub tram!

The non-Schengen lounge is okay but compared to a lot of others I found it meh. Maybe I've been spoiled with the QF F Lounges (as well as various Asian and UK lounges), but food is limited (their evening a la carte menu turned out to be a solitary fish bake and they charge for the booze (not cheap either). Also lack of any quiet dark corner to try and get a snooze was a downer). However they do have showers and architecturally it is pleasing with a great view of the runway.

Schengen lounge was one of those second level fit it in where there is space deals. Didn't find it great at all (though still beat sitting with the masses). I think being the only game in town however has stopped AY Lounges from being truly spectacular.

Since I booked my ticket they've changed the configuration from BKK to HEL so I've changed my seat to a single on the left hand side - I've now got 4A each way. Wondering from anyone else's experience are they likely to keep changing the aircraft between now and my trip next March/April, or is this maybe a planned refurbishment?

Anyone flown AY since the last update in this thread? It was good to read Robert's update - if all goes well I won't have time to sample any lounges in HEL.

I have from BKK to CDG (via HEL) a couple of weeks back ... I don't see them change the config often ... about the same as QF for operational reasons it seems. The single seats are very good for solo travels. This is the route I use to CDG or into Europe now as I skip the the UK and Middle East and earn full SCs on OW flights. Sometimes I will also use their SIN connection but that is an A340. I prefer the via BKK route which is A330 as I like to spend a night at the BKK Hilton.

For anyone going to the QF Corporate Travel Show in other cities, they were exhibiting in Brisbane, so if you have any specific questions I'm sure you could see their friendly staff in person, if you're invited ;)

I'm a big HEL/AY fan too. I just returned from another J class trip from Europe. I got into the method of buying my return ticket out of a European point of origin and then to SYD. With the once exceptionally high AUD this has saved me at least 40% on the ex SYD price. The most recent AY flight was ex WAW (most inexpensive departure point I could find) and uses CX codeshare between HKG and SYD in both directions. It came in at around $3300. This has since increased quite considerably. Longing for a bull turnaround on the AUD!
