Good to see so many here concerned with Qantas' costs and maintenance plans.

Bad to see you can't seem to see that this is a good decision for older aircraft. You are on your own here. It makes no business sense as we've already stated here to spend millions on putting in full IFE for something that won't be around in a couple of years (and could easily be retro fitted to other aircraft.

Your comments are long past becoming tiring Mal Ware

We will hear more on future aircraft tomorrow I believe.
Yawn. Same tired line you repeatedly trot out for so many Qantas and Virgin results briefings, a pointless 'I have inside knowledge' tease which once again proves groundless.

But I won't hold my breath as you have been saying it for a while

Well look at it this way, one day he may actually turn out to be right, a bit like how "a broken watch is still accurate twice a day". Still I'd rather hear less of this self-inflating rumour mongering.

The EK tie up wasn't groundless speculation

I was talking about the repeated tips on "new aircraft orders" or "full refurb for DJ A330s" and so on, which are always carefully couched as "hint hint, I know something you don't".

But to your example, I presume you mean QF-EK tie-up which everybody in the media had been writing about and tipping for months? Yes, what a stunningly accurate prediction that was, totally awesome inside knowledge, nobody saw that coming!

Seriously, I don't want this to sound like an infraction-earning personal attack, it is not an 'attack' on the personality of someone, but on this repeated stoking of the rumour fires which really just comes across to me as big-noting rather than providing any real value or information to members.

I would have suspected that said contingency could have pushed the limits of the economics of the iPad option, notwithstanding the non-economic factors (some for and against).

I'll be interested to find out how long the high capacity batteries (assumed) will last; as they start to deteriorate in holding charge, it'll get to the point where once a day charging is not enough, and dare I say it but the full (or reasonable) charge may not even last one flight. And it seems that, short of a comprehensive replacement cycle plan, there is no backup process to account for such possible deficiencies.

Sent from my GT-I9300 using AustFreqFly

They are not high capacity batteries. It is a standard iPad 2. The trial units had a big case with an extra battery.

Yesterdays Austbt story mentioned iPad 2's intitially but has since been changed to say the refurbed 767s will have the latest iPad version
"Each of the Qantas-issued iPads –which are third-gen Retina models"
sounds like QF must have sent a claification note to Austbt ,as it was only there a couple of hours

So QF wont have the latest models as the third generation retina is not the latest model.

Thanks to Deka for the photos. Looks like a good solution for an aircraft that will not be around for too much longer.

Out of interest, how long did the seatback IFE last on the 744s (I guess from introduction c1989 to now.....)?

All I corrected was that they dont have iPad2's
Given lead times for projects I suspect when ordered it was the latest model.Either way v3's are better an v2's and both
are better than Old CRTs hanging from the ceiling.

The iPad 2's supposedly had the better battery life as they refined the manufacturing of the older components since its initial release. (The A5 CPU was redesigned down to a 32nm process earlier this year.)

Apologies - I wasn't meant to be criticising you - more the revised statement from AustBT which was still not accurate.

LOL I love the common theme.

Maybe it is a common theme as quite a few people believe it?

I dont think you understand that as consumers we need to be concerned about the financial choices our providers make. If they make bad choices we end up paying for it through higher ticket prices or reduced services. If QF spent the millions extra to put in what you want - how do you think they would fund it? Out of AJ's bonus or out a higher ticket price?

I think most people here agree that if this was the 787 then it wouldn't be a good choice and everyone in this thread would be decrying QF.

However in 10 years time the thought of the airline providing limited in seat IFE might be equally ridiculous - people will be streaming direct from a content provider or from their home and not being limited by what an airline wants to provide.

Personally I hope that QF put those tablet holsters in the new aircraft so I can watch what I want on my device but in a more convenient way for me.

The common theme I was referring to, is the standard caviet many are putting to their like of the new IFE and that being the "For an aircraft that will not be around for much longer" or similar.

So when you see a movie, buy your grocerys, stay in a motel etc, do you consider what value for money you are getting, or do you consider what it might cost the provider/supplier of the service? Or is it just Qantas you and others feel this way about?

LOL I have said it before, I could care less how they fund it and AJ's bonus would probably be a good place to start. BTW Millions?

I agree with this, it should be an option for those who want to use their own, hang it in front of the seat back screen.
