It was the same crew when I did this status run last year, and coming back to make it worse, I was the only passenger in J. The FA asked if I had been dropping something off and I said I had .

HA - I have used that excuse before!

+1 - I said it was a contract I need to have signed!

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

to OP that sounds like some insane flying...I hope you have a good nights sleep! :)

as for the FA's asking im kinda surprised at that! I'd have just expected them to discreetly not mention it! :P heh.

It doesn't only happen domestically. 4 weeks ago I had a 2 day business trip from SYD to CGK and had the same seat (Y baulkhead) over and back, with the same crew. As soon as I sat down, without even checking the manifest I was greeted by name, asked if I had had a successful trip and offered a glass of champagne.

Had similar occurrence on two flights to Germany last year as well, when I had 2 flights over and back within the same month.

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

I'll need to think of an excuse as well, for my SYD-ASP-SYD sectors on the 29th...

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

Any reason to need an excuse? Anything wrong with just saying your are doing an SC run?

Yeah las time I told them about the SC Run (for me it was silver to gold) and she gave me a bottle of wine to celebrate.

I dont drink anyway but it was a nice gesture :)

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

Actually this sounds like the most sensible status run I have seen. With the OPs travel you just have to do this once and if the pattern of travel remains the same keep WP easily. So the points cost will soon be recouped.
That means WP will have cost 1 weekend and $495.If WP status is maintained for 5 years then just $99 a year-bargain in my books.

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

Great work - I really think a SR like this for me is something of a one off. I did SYD-CBR-SYD four times in two days to requal for EXP on the expectation that I wouldnt be making OWE the following year but would be doing some flying.

Trip report on that here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....trip-photos/the-game-is-afoot-race-15761.html

It's going to be interesting with the FA's because it looks like I will have the same crew and planes on SYD/ASP/ASP/SYD. at least if there is a delay departing SYD it means the same flight will be delayed depart ASP back to SYD.

Just tell them you had to go to ASP to sign a document in person ;)

Way easier than explaining status runs to those who literally do fly daily!

I hope you get a 73H with AVOD!

EARN: 660 status credits + 13,945 + 5,000 = 18,945

TOTAL COST: $495 / 65,055 points

Just to clarify that the total cost is taking into account the EARN from the flights as well ?

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

It was but as someone pointed out there is a mistake in the calculation as its 8,000 bonus not 5,000. So as follows:

EARN: 660 SC + 13,945 + 8,000 = 21,945
TOTAL COST: $495 + 62,055 (taking into account points earned)

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

So does that mean the actual cost is around 80,000 points but you earn back 20,000 or am I missing something?

Correct. Sorry I should have been clear. Total points cost is 84,000. Earn 21,945 for the flights so it equates to 62,055

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

So im currently sitting in Alice Springs with 5 of my 7 sectors now complete. Unfortunately the small lounge here is completely full but the desk attendant inside was happy for me to take food and drink from the lounge into the terminal. Here is a quick run down of my journey so far which commenced early Saturday Morning.

Flight 1: Mel to Syd @ 7:00am on Saturday - JASA. Well this was my most eventful flight so far. I got on the plane with my boarding pass for seat 2A and was pleasantly surprised by a very hard core looking bikey sitting in my seat holding a boarding pass in his hand for seat 42E. I politely advised him that he was in my seat, he looked at me with a death stare and then proceeded to turn the other way. I must admit i felt very intimidated and didnt want to hold up the rest of the boarding process so I just sat down in 2B. As per usual the FA's didn't bother to greet passengers and therefore did not pickup on the fact that this guy was not sitting where he should have been. Doors closed and the FA's went to there jump seats and the departure was now in motion. So now I had a little dilemma on my hands, if I complain to the FA about this guy several things could happen, 1. he could get into an argument with the FA's and make the plane turn around because the FA's would be scared (no good for me as I had connections to catch), 2. I could advise the front cabin attendant and then have this passenger know that I dobbed him in. 3. I could go to the FA's in the next cabin and explain the situation to them. I decided to go with option 3 once the plane had leveled out after take off. This is how the conversation went:

Adam: Excuse me what does my boarding card say
FA: it says seat 2A sir.
Adam: So why is there a very intimidating person sitting in my seat?
FA: What do you mean?
Adam: I mean that I pay a premium over the other passengers to sit at the front of the aircraft and there is a passenger sitting next to me holding a boarding card to 42E, he is a pretty intimidating looking person and I should not have to be put into a position where I feel intimidated when I fly with your airline, especially in Business Class.
FA: Yes sir this is definitely a problem, lets go back to row 2 and we can have him moved to his actual seat.
Adam: I dont want to come with you to row 2 and have him moved, I dont want this person knowing that I am the reason he is being moved, the last thing I want is this guy and/or his friends confronting me on arrival into Sydney, I should never have been put in this position in the first place and its unacceptable.
FA: Ok, you hide in the galley and as he walks one direction we will signal you and you walk the other direction so you don't make any contact with him.
Adam: OK
This happened and I then went back to my seat (already 30 mins into the flight)
CSM: Hi sir, I just wanted to let you know that we would have realized that he was in the wrong seat as we go through the manifest.
Adam: you would have realised when you serve the food because thats when you would check the manifest for Business Class.
CSM: no, this is not the case we would have picked it up straight away......
Adam: whatever you say, the fact that I had to go and tell FA's in the middle cabin because I felt intimidated is completely unacceptable and this should never have occured. You can see the entire business cabin when you board the plane and the fact that he sat in 2A straight away shows a lack of awareness from your Cabin Crew when boarding the plane.
CSM: enjoy the rest of the flight MR ******.

I have to say in all my years of flying this was definitely the most awkward situation I have been in. I spent the remainder of the flight worried about my personal safety in case this guy saw me when we got off the plane. As soon as i got off I went straight to the lounge to ensure that he would not be able to spot me. I told the staff at the counter at the lounge, they handed me a business card with a web address to the online submission form for complaints.........Wow what an amazing customer service system they have in place, what a disgrace.

Flight 2: Sydney to Alice Springs - JASA - Was a pleasent flight with no problems at all, FA's extremely nice.

Flight 3: Alice Springs to Sydney - YASA (same plane and crew) - I was in 13A (Exit Row), as soon as I was seated the CSM came to me and said "Adam we were expecting you up the front of the plane again, please let us know if you would like anything throughout the flight, they even offered me the Business Class meal". I was really happy with the service on this flight and the FA's did a great job to ensure I was comfortable even though I was in the Y cabin.

Flight 4: Sydney to Melbourne - YASA - I was supposed to be on the 6:00pm service, managed to get moved to the 5:00pm service with no hassle after landing at 4:40pm from the previous flight, hence I got home an hour earlier, went out for dinner with the other half and had a nice evening.

Flight 5: Melbourne to Alice Springs - JASA - 1A was nice, only 3 other pax in Business class, I had A/B to myself, really nice FA's......great flight, great crew and best of all was a very new plane with good entertainment system etc.

Flight 6: boarding in 40 minutes.......Ill update the post once my mission is over.

It's been an interesting 36 hours to say the least! Im still trying to decide what to do about the incident on my first flight and if I should escalate it with Executive Relations......or just leave it alone and see if either the FA's or the lounge lodged a report and therefore ill get a follow up during the week.

Im sorry to have written such a large post but thought that some members on here may find it interesting and if this situation has occured with any members previosuly and what was the outcome?

Im not re-reading the post so sorry for any spelling or gramatical errors.

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

So I have my first Status run coming up this weekend to take advantage of the DSC promotion. I called Qantas to merge 2 separate bookings together and the lady thought I was playing a joke on her when she brought up the flight info and then proceeded to ask me 3 times if I was sure I knew what I was doing. This is going to be a weekend to remember (i'm not sure if its something I would want to tell too many people about though)

I currently need 660 status credits to achieve WP for the first time with a rollover of Nov 30. This is what my weekend currently looks like:

Saturday 26[SUP]th[/SUP] May
Melbourne to Sydney 7:00 / 08:25 - JASA
Sydney to Alice Springs 09:50 / 12:35 - JASA
Alice Springs to Sydney 13:20 / 16:35 - YASA
Sydney to Melbourne 18:00 / 19:35 - YASA

Sunday 27[SUP]th[/SUP] May
Melbourne to Alice Springs – 08:35 / 11:00 - JASA
Alice Springs to Sydney 1:20 / 16:35 - JASA
Sydney to Melbourne 5:15 / 18:50 – JASA

EARN: 660 status credits + 13,945 + 5,000 = 18,945

TOTAL COST: $495 / 65,055 points

Can you advise why it costs $495.00?

Thank you.

Glenn

Hi to all,

I think this is a very good way of getting the SC up and I would like to do this as well.

Can anyone tell me if my calculations are correct or not on the following schedule based on J class travel?

Syd - Alice = 80 SC
Alice - Perth = 40 SC (economy only available)
Perth - Sydney = 80 SC
Sydney - Alice - Sydney = 160

This would be a total of 360 SC and with the current promotion would double to 720 SC

Do I use points to do this?

If so how do i find out how many are required?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Glenn - Sydney

I do like your run, mine have made use of TSV and DRW and nice places as they are it would be good to also visit other (for me) far-flung reaches of Australia! Alice Springs is one of the few well-known (I was going to say major) places I haven't seen yet. The crew reaction can be funny.

As for who you tell about it, it's mandatory to share on AFF, and probably mandatory not to outside it ;)

Has your shiny new platinum status posted yet?

40 SC for ASP-PER as long as it's full economy - I thought the price difference with discount Y would be ugly but it's not too bad actually - $178 extra for 20 more SCs. So your calculations are all correct. As anchew said, the JASA thread is a great starting point and you'll probably be able to work out something at even better value as long as you have the points to spare, and the key is to find flights closer to the classic (say 47,666 for PER-SYD) rather than the wasteful (233,346) level. Happy hunting and status-running :)
