First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on her

ASA's are not status related AFAIK. Cheap ones come about with certain fare bucket availability.

PS has its benefits, especially when flying AA in America for one.

What benefits are they?

You get oneworld ruby status which gives you free checked baggage for you and your travelling partner(s):

American Airlines Checked Baggage Charge Exceptions | AA.com

The following passengers will be allowed a 1st and/or 2nd checked bag at no additional charge provided it falls within the size and weight limitations. These free checked bag allowances apply on flights operated by American Airlines, American Eagle, and AmericanConnection®. On codeshare flights operated by other carriers, the baggage allowance and charges of the operating carrier apply.

And even more important in the USA (do people ever actually check backs in the USA??) is Priority AAccess. You get access to the premium security line as well as earlier boarding. You *need* this in the USA if you want *any* hope of getting your bags in an overhead and not having to gate check them.

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

I'm having a good laugh reading the different excuses people have come up with (but not necessarily used) when doing the SRs.

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

I'm looking forward to a SC run on June 17. In Biz from BNE-PER-KTA-PER-SYD-BNE. Yep, a total of 24 hours flighting with 6 hours in total at the QC Lounge in PER. Total SC's earnt 320 x 2 = 640 for 72,000 points and $375. Will earn 8,000 loyalty QFF points and earn around 12,000 for the flight, so only used 52,000 points. Any suggestions on better routing for more SC's?

I will be on the same plane to Brisbane and back.

"I'm in altitude training for my space mission."

"It's a mystery shopper project"

But I think I will just tell them I needed one flight to get to Platinum. They must understand?

Where's the fun in that?

"My bucket list is to sit in every seat on this plane"

"The smoked salmon salad is just divine"

"I can't get enough of the bear" (if ADL)

"My partner said they needed some space"

"My brother is flying up on the other airline and I bet him I'd get there first"

"I'm doing some aerial surveying for a property I want to buy"

"This is my carbon tax protest"

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

Why would status make it any easier to buy ASA tickets? AFAIK they are just like any other revenue ticket as far as availability is concerned.
If you're talking about cheaply priced ASAs, that also has nothing to do with status AFAIK.
You may be thinking of classic awards...
Have just finished a comparison using classic awards - Me silver; Mrs D bronze. Guess what? - the same, pathetic availability even 12 months ahead. Nothing but Cathay in J.
So silver makes no difference to availability for either ASA's or classic awards.
I stick to my original premise. QF Bronze and Silver s**ks.

A J Classic to LHR? It is a game to be played, even for those with higher levels of status. NB's and PS's wouldn't be alone in that one.

Thanks Mannej. Good to know I'm not on my own, searching vainly.

I love your suggestions eastflyer. Has anyone considered a dedicated thread on excuses for status runs?

Moderators, can we please split off the excuses posts so I can continue to indulge the inner comedian that's yearning to come out? :p

Given this thread is all about the excuses I see no need - for a new thread or excuses!

No amount of Status Credits are worth an overnight stay in Alice.

Seen some of the troubles of Alice Springs on the news. Looks like a scary place!

Yep, I was going to mention that the exception to the rule is for those of WP or higher status getting extra award seats released but as many have reported here, even that is never guaranteed and dependent on yield management.

So in that case, you could say "QF NB, PS, SG all suck with the occasional exception of WP and P1 when you want to get a classic award released for a particular time and sector"

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

OT:

It is my experience that any additional availability exetended to elites (online at least) does not extend to ASA. If E/F shoes P/U/Z/X availability, it generally extends to ASA's at low points rates.

Not so for classic awards ...

Re: First status run kicking off soon. Qantas lady thought I was playing a joke on he

Personally, I have zero problems in telling the FA's i'm on a status run. I was doing a run in the USA a few years ago, and was on an a/c that went u/s. In the process, I was discussing my options with the CSM as I mentioned I had a few connections that day. This was in September of the year. She said "Ohhhh you're doing a mileage run... but it's not December aren't you doing it a little early? (AA status runs Jan-Dec). I explained the QF system and got 'wow you're crazy!' and asked if I was flying in F all day. When I responded I was, her response was "oh but you'll need something at the hotel tonight! Here, let me get you set up there" and grabbed my airsick bag. She promptly returned with a bag *full* of mini-vodka bottles (10, if I recall). Needless to say, when we got in the air, the service was boozy too (and I did miss a connection, but was auto re-booked anyway so still ended up in F all the way from MIA to LAX).

It helped that i'm an Aussie in the USA, but you'd be surprised how a little crazy can translate to a fun trip!
