First Test Aust v England - Score Update

If I was Strauss I would keep batting and try to get to 1/600 and totally demoralise the Aussie bowlers.

I know some people may not like the appointment of Greg Chappell to the selection panel but he could be the one to break up the current "clique" and blood some younger cricketers. Sure Australia may not do well for the next couple of years but they can't do any worse then they have done in the last 12 months.

Good to see all 3 English batsmen have now hit 100 for this innings, especially good to see Cook hit 200 :D

Not sure if England will send Australia back in, the practice is good, but some fielding practice might be useful towards the end of the day too :p

My concern is Cook and Trott being exhausted after this and us being put into bat first on Thursday.

Personality and being part of the in-crowd have a lot to do with test selection ... just ask Dean Jones or Brad Hodge ...

Maybe some of the out-of-form selectors should be dropped. Get a bowler on to the selection team :)

Records being broken all over the place. I cannot believe that in Australia-England tests this the first time that the first 3 English batsmen have each scored a century.

Not as exhausted as the Australian bowlers if Australia bowls first on Thursday. ;)

Interesting decision that England have declared at 1/517. Not sure what they are likely to achieve other than to give Australia more batting practice.

Or can England do the impossible? :p

More likely that happens than Australia making the required total (most definitely). 1 wicket down - hope Australia aren't goaded enough to start getting sloppy.

Probably more a psychological masterstroke to declare rather than play out the day. The result was obviously going to be much the same.

It might get some of the England slackers off their backsides after having been sat down for two days ;)

The Poms are now condident in their top order batting, but realise they need to fine tune their bowling.

What they need is for their bowlers (rested for the last 2 days) to now be bowling at a very tired (mentally and physically) Aussie team [who have been out in the field for the same time] - as anat0l alluded.

Katich gone. 1/11 now. Australia require another 286 runs with 9 wickets remaining - no chance they will chase it, but playing for a draw also has it's problems (like matchplay in golf, JohnK).

Who would have thought that Australia would get this close to 500 after being 5/143!

Just goes to show that with enough chances and a lot of luck it is possible to score runs....

Who'd have thought England could get 1/517 after being all out for 260

Match drawn with the Aussies 1/107 (Ponting 51 not out, Watson 41 not out). Both Captains agree no result possible.
Onto the Second Test!

So the combined second innigs score was 2 for 624

Says something about the pitch, I suggest. Probably a result of the rain in the last few months that is quite unusual for Brisbane.

In my opinion, the lost (retirement) of 3 players (I call them "once in a generation players"), Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne (maybe the best bowler in the Hx of test cricket!) and Glen McGrath has resulted in Australia's current slide in the world of test cricket.

I remember in 1984, the almost simultaneous retirement of Greg Chappell, Dennis Lillee, and Rodney Marsh resulted in a very, very lean period in Australian test cricket for many years....and I fear the same now.... :(
