I tend to take the $10 off on small shops. $10 off a $60 shop feels like a bargain.
The wonders of modern marketing.

This offer targets the 'desire for instant gratification' aka 'impulse buy'.

If you do not work the points schemes then growing a points balance is a bit like contributing to superannuation through your working life WITHOUT any compounding benefit. Pointless literally & figuratively especially now that both inflation & interest rates have reverted to noticeable levels.

But if you play the game the the 0.5 cent value you get from 2,000 points giving you $10 off your shopping is a very poor return compared with dedicated premium flight redemptions is you feel that way inclined.

There are drawbacks that are age related though (which some of us no longer contemplate). For example it is harder to play the game when you have young children - harder but not impossible. For example we achieved nearly 7 cents a point value for Avios points (family return to Europe on BA earnt them) by redeeming them for return Y (unbelievable value which made me a fan of Avios for a while) from London to Austria & we had a little choice of which day/flight for 5 seats around 10 months out.

Similarly, where you work can make it much harder. Such as some (all?) State Health Depts, where rosters are only created weeks, not months, in advance.

Everyone's circumstances are different but it is worth thinking about whether you're being swayed by 'pyschological warfare' by the company's 'loyalty' scheme or logic.

Mea Culpa - In very early 2000s I redeemed points for a children's DVD & Bunnings voucher (I tell myself that the redemption rate back then was far better than today so it wasn't that bad). Both were worth less than a cent per point. 😢

@RAM How do you achieve 7c per point return? Is that based on what the airline charges for a premium ticket?

For some people premium travel is only worth marginally more than an economy redemption.

To each their own.

The London to Austria flight (from Gatwick IIRC) was for economy seats that as reward seats were being offered at something like a 30 to 35% discount to the normal reward price and included a checked bag.

At the time the cash fare less the unavoidable F&Cs divided by the points per seat worked out at around 7 cents (rounded to nearest cent. After I booked them I left it a couple of days and then rang to confirm all was OK. I hoped it was not a system pricing error or such like.

No, it just happened that the date range I wanted had very few sales (I asked the CSA 'out of interest' how many Y seats have been sold' and including ours it was around ten). It was a BA codeshare flight operated by GB Airways and not served by BA aircraft. As it happened, our last visit in the UK was just 15 minutes away from Gatwick Airport.

I suspect, but could/would not prove that the Avios price may have changed for the worse after just 1 or 2 seats being redeemed but as we did 5 in the one transaction - the stars were aligned in our favour for once.

Then next year BA purchased GB Airways unfortunately so we shifted to flying into Munich and taking the train.

Glad we’ve managed to convince even you, JohnK, that premium is only ‘worth’ what you’d be prepared to pay for it, not what the vendor wants to charge for it. Worth/value should not be confused with cost but so frequently is by those new to this game.

I thought I was arguing this point a long time ago?

In my mind if

- SYD-BKK economy return costs $1000
- SYD-BKK premium economy return is worth $1250-$1500 max
- SYD-BKK business return is worth $1500-$2000 max

With 3 of us travelling I'd like to get the $1000 per person even lower if possible without resorting to Scoot or AirAsia so the premium cabins are out of the question.

One account spend $90 until Tuesday for 3600 bonus points and other account spend $80 until Tuesday for 3200 bonus points.

They're both a good return but I don't want to ruin the spend $60 and spend $50 offers.

Got the $90 offer too, due to account juggling (and the need to spend anyway) I think I'll go for it.

Was going to give the 4 weeker a miss, but got below offer as double up so will slog it out now.

We can spend it too but in my experience it takes 2-3 weeks to have another 4 x weekly offer on $50 and $60 spend. If I spend $80 or $90 it then takes 6-7 weeks to get offers back down to $50 or $60.

Going to be an interesting 4 weeks:
Spend $60 pw for 4 weeks:10K FB pts
Spend $70 pw for 4 weeks:10K FB pts
Spend $110 pw for 4 weeks:10K FB pts

Wonder if I can do all 3?! ;)
I actually had a 4th one, spend $60 for 4 weeks: 10 K FB pts.

Completed all 4 yesterday! We have enough toilet paper, tissues, laundry and cleaning products etc etc to last 2 years I reckon ;)

Nice double up today. 2 x spend $160 for 6400 points. That's a nice $64 back on my $190 shop.

Thanks for reminding me!

I'd a mental blank on the non-alignment of the 10K offers (ending on Sundays) vs the weekly specials (ending on Tuesdays). The coming specials make achieving the required spends look challenging, however thanks to your memory prompt - we can fill some today with the decent specials (for our normal spending items) ending tonight.

We completed ours today for both our 10k offers including an extra 1000 points for spending $20 each on cleaning products that we use anyways.

No weekly offers but do have a spend $90 for 3600 bonus points Wed-Fri on both accounts.

No thanks as I'd like to keep spend targets to $50-$60.
