Forced closing on window shades in J SIN-SYD day flight

I still don't understand the issue here....if you don't want to be bothered by the window, why don't you just choose a window seat and keep the thing closed. Then it will never bother you.

.....

If you want to sleep or work on your laptop or whatever then choose the appropriate seat for what you want to do.
guilting people out of using the benefits of their seat or its position, just because you don't plan your seat choice better is just plain selfish.

One can plan and allocate a specific seat, but as we know and the airlines will tell you, it does not guarantee you will be seated in that allocated seat.

And assuming seat allocations were guaranteed, what happens if there are more passengers who want a window seat but can't select one because all are already allocated? It seems unfair that the person who misses out on a window seat have no say in the shade position, yet initially wanting a window seat.

But more importantly, I still don't see how the person who sits next to the window (or any other passenger), be the sole legal custodian of the positioning of the shades for the flight?

As mentioned, there is no one size fits all approach, a bit of courtesy from all travellers goes a long long way - and hopefully simple reasonable requests whether for being up or down shade can be equitable settled.

You can't have it all!
other people do have a choice as well.
If you do want it all, then buy the whole row and be done with it.
Unfortunately the other side of the argument thinks that someone sitting 27 rows back can tell a person to put their window shade down. That is taking it a little too far.

Actually I think this one would be fairly easy to resolve. drron asks nicely if the window could please be lowered so he can watch a movie. JohnK explains that he is watching the coast of Greece and that in 30 minutes (SWAG) the plane will be out of view of said coast and he will happily lower the window.

Both parties have compromised and achieved their desired goals.
Sounds like a good compromise if drron really did want to watch a movie although if I catch him dozing off then the window shade goes back up. :p

JohnK, you must be one big/tall/large person. I'm 6'2" (90kg, yes I know my BMI is >25, I'm working on it!! :p) and have never had an issue with the seat back screen in Y with a reclined seat.
My BMI reading is "You should be dead". Not quite but it is >40. My problem is I cannot recline. If the person in front reclines then the screen is at a funny angle and I am unable to concentrate or view the screen properly. Did not have an issue the last 3-4 years on Qantas (pre-allocate exit row as a Platinum until recent changes) and now need to think of a new strategy. If row 80 on QF A380 and row 48 on SQ A380 is as good as it is reported to be then I shall be comfortable again in WHY and not worry about recliners.

And anyone that wants window shade up is not problem with me as I can sleep through an earthquake....

I personally hate been told to close the window shades, as I feel if I want them up I should be able to do so... It makes me feel like I have the worst of all worlds, I'm furthest from the asile (which strangly enough I'm now becoming a fan of), and yet don't get to look out the window. That said, on flights with seatback IFE I usually do close the shades as it makes the screen easier to see.

That said, I do want it to be my choice...

I know you have mentioned this a couple of times and I know what you mean but is it still a problem when you reposition the screen? I don't know if this will make sense but usually when you press the top part of the screen you can readjust it (the actual screen moves...). They are made like this so that when the seat in front is reclined you can still enjoy in flight entertainment. If anyone else can explain better about the moving of the screen, help!

On Qantas , it is your choice regardless how the FA word it. I have checked this out with QF and was informed that , other than for safety issues such as take off and landing where they should be open, the cabin crew does not have the authority to require a passenger to close it

I personally hate it when 99% of the cabin have there shades closed and 1 person decides to keep it open when a large majority are sleeping and lights are off, or worse still I hate when the cabin is dark and someone decides to turn their 'reading' light on even though not reading, it lights up damn 5 metre radius around their seat..

If I am sitting in a window seat on a long haul flight I am always conscious of someone sitting next to me, if I can see their TV screen has glare I will close it all or most of the way. If the lights are off and a large majority have their shades shut or are sleeping I will shut mine as well.

Its really just a bit of common courtesy, after all you pay for your seat, not the ability to dictate the cabin ambience. :)

Unfortunately no amount of adjusting the screen is enough. The piicture is very faint and hard to follow.

Since I cannot control what other people do I have accepted the challenge for me to contunue flying in WHY and not have recliners in front me while at the same time not paying for exit row.
