I thought the current choices in J were either Charles Heidsieck Reserve or Billiecart NV? I'm a big fan of the NV Billiecart, I haven't had the Heidsieck before.
In 388 First last night it was "Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 'blanc de blancs' 1999"

Did you like it? I really love the blanc de blanc style.

I'll be flying in CX First soon so i'm looking forward to lots of Krug and Dom Perignon.

Comtes de Champagne has been one of my favourites in recent years.....the 2000 is superb

I'm in Champagne in just over a month....only visiting a couple of houses though.... Dom Perignon, Bollinger, Larmandier-Bernier and Anselme Selosse....Only have one day there unfortunately though spending a week in Burgundy won't be too bad ;)

Ahhhh a week in Burgundy, now that would be fun.

Upon presenting the bottle to me in First:

FA: Mr dfcatch, will this be suitable?

ME: Yes, I think that will be fine.

FA: It really is hard to go wrong with the Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1999 isn't it :)

ME: Glug, Glug, Glug, I think I'll have some more please :)

I have absolutely no complaint with the Tat Comtes it is superb.
For my personal taste it's not quite as perfect as a Krug from a good vintage, but differentiating is just arguing over how many angels can dance on the end of a pin. Dom, Krug, Tat et al are at the pinnacle of the wine makers art. You can have a preference, but you can't argue that any of them aren't sublime, shut your eyes and savour experiences.

I'm still partial to the Taittinger - whether it be the Brut Imperial (easier to get) or the 1999 Comtes de Champagne.

Although, some recent ones have graced my palate. Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill was quite nice - rather comparable in character to the Bollinger Grand Anee 2000 IMO, though there are subtle differences (much harder to qualify since I last had the Grand Anee in 2009).

On LX I had the Laurent-Perrier Grand Sircele, which wasn't bad but after a couple of generous glasses of it, I had to send away the FA from topping up my glass before it sent me to the wall!

NZ to AKL they had Deutz and Mumm Cordon. Both refused; the first one doesn't deserve to be a Champagne IMHO; I probably wouldn't even use it for rocket fuel, really.

Methinks we may have to respin the title of this thread or spin off another thread to reflect that it's morphing into a discussion about Champagnes in general!

Everyones palettes are different, it's all pretty subjective. Glad you're a fan of the tattinger though, people like to dismiss it as not very good cause its the cheapest of the three.
Agreed. It's entirely subjective, which is why I tend to place little emphasis of what experts say and pay attention to my palette. Of course I'll listen to them first, then my mouth decides the rest. Gotta have a starting point :)

Oh the Pol Roger Churchill is one of my favorite sparklings of all time. So truly excellent.

But I much prefer the Deutz over the GH Mumm. I'll agree that both aren't excellent, but the Deutz is a little more interesting cause its from Aÿ, where the grapes are predominantly pinot noir. The mumm is gross in my opinion. NZ should be offering some good quality Marlborough Sparkling and showing off their local talents, like Cloudy Bay which are some of the best sparklings in the world and blow most cheap NV Champagne out of the water.

I suppose its a matter of appearance, airlines offering champagne (even cheap stuff) because most people immediately assume its good quality.

Well, you're obviously not a Champagne person. Period.

I don't like all champagnes, but as for preferred one(s) amongst the collegiate they do vary from individual to individual.
I don't mind drinking champagne, or cuvee, sometimes but these were awful and yet people continue to rave on about them.

Perhaps I am totally wrong....

If you do fly in F its actually 5 Champs to contend with

Out of the F lounge and dive into the Tattenger Compe for teh journey

In F on Monday SYD/BKK so will rack my brain over teh the order in which ti taste whilst getting a massage

Many thanks for FASA's hee hee:cool:

Cathay F for Krug, thats a tough one to beat as well

Dom, Tat, Verve le Grande Dame, Sir Winston and may I suggest to add one more to the list

The Pomeroy Louise

Now wouldnt that be a taste off on a 14 hour long haul!!!!!!!

I suspect not even a hangover in sight with that quality bunch:cool:

No, you're just not the one for the taste of it, or some, or all of them.

That doesn't make them awful per se, you just don't like them. That's it.

Just as I do not like most Australian beers (amongst them, xx_X, Carlton and likewise). I don't mind drinking them, but personally I do not like them at all. That doesn't make them awful by themselves.

You're not wrong, you just don't like champagnes. I don't like beers. I also don't like most sweet wines/sweet bubbles. It's just personal preference. I don't like mushrooms or mangoes, either, and people who love these foods would think that I'm crazy. *shrug*

I can't believe that I've not seen this thread until now!
No day is complete without a glass - or two - of Champagne.
Your impending trip sounds wonderful, despite the one day constraint. Detailed trip report and tasting notes, please. :D
Have not had the opportunity to visit L-B or Selosse but love their bubbles.
pj

For entry level my preference is Bollinger then Veuve Clicquot. Both very easy to drink. I'm waiting for a special occasion to open my two bottles of Krug and 2002 La Grande Annee.

Never flown in F before I can imagine the first time to be spectacular and not a very sobering experience!

Katie... I don't like mushrooms but I love mangoes! Matsos Mango beer is a match made in heaven!

One of the high points of my vinous life was a Krug tasting where we tasted the current and previous year NV. 3 different vintage Krugs, a rose, and the clos du Mesnil - the single vineyard ($1500 per bottle at Dan's).

It quite spoiled me for 'orinary' champagne for a little while.

On my first ever F flight on SQ about 15 years ago I think I heard the most wonderful sentence in the English language:

'Krug or Dom Perignon sir?'
