Further Status Extension to 28 Feb 2023

Mine has just been extended * until February 2023:
* Status Extension
Status membership extension until 28 February 2023 offer is available only to Velocity Frequent Flyer Platinum and Gold members whose Status has been previously extended until 30 September 2022 as part of the 2020 Status Rewards Program. The 2020 Status Rewards Program required eligible Platinum and Gold members to book a Virgin Australia marketed flight by 28 March 2021 for travel from 7 December 2020 (including Reward Seat bookings). Codeshare services marketed or operated by partner airlines were not eligible for this offer. You must have added your Velocity number to your booking to have received this extension.

Mine has been extended also, but not as generously as I'm only Silver status now - received an email today that my status will be extended for 8 months from my nominal review date (following the previous extension), so until May 2022.

I may end up doing a domestic trip to see Dad in NSW before the end of May, but can't see myself doing much in the way of other travel, especially as the first 3 months of the year are a blackout period at work anyway for our team taking leave.

In the same email, there was this:

Earn bonus Status Credits with Virgin Australia

Earn bonus Status Credits on all eligible Virgin Australia flights when you travel from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022^. You'll earn up to 100% bonus Status Credits in Economy and up to 45% bonus Status Credits in Business, regardless of when you booked^.

EXCLUSIVE OFFER - Offer expires: 20 Jan 2025

- Earn up to 200,000 bonus Velocity Points*
- Enjoy unlimited complimentary access to Priority Pass lounges worldwide
- Earn up to 3 Citi reward Points per dollar uncapped

*Terms And Conditions Apply

Ah you’re correct. Good for moving up the ladder. I’m already Platinum so no real benefit. It’s odd that the marketing department wouldn’t try and encourage more bookings by allowing a rollover.
Can gift Companion Gold/Platimum if you earn enough which is nice. In the past I’ve gifted to my son and father

I've got a query and I have NOT received any emails from VA so far re status extensions till 2023

I recently became VA Gold via the Discover Gold program. My review date is 11 June 2022. I did book and travel well before the 28 Mar 2021 date.

So will me Gold be extended till 2023?

Yeah I recently attained Gold (not with discover gold) and haven’t received an email either 🥺

They've only talked about dates up to April 2022.

Eligible Platinum, Gold and Silver Velocity Members with a current review date between 30 September 2021 and 30 April 2022 (inclusive) will have their Status extended for an additional 8 months upon their next review date.

My wife and I both also got the Plat Feb 28 one.

Our Anniversary dates were Oct and April as I recall.

I am GUESSING that for once Virgin have taken this ongoing COVID mess, as an opportune chance to use some sense, and are bringing annual membership into a UNIVERSAL expiry date for ALL status - as US Airlines and Hotel plans seemingly have done for decades.

What you earned in any Calendar year was all that ever counted. The End Feb part - for my decades with Continental and United was just a small courtesy perk. (US airlines were to end Jan, in my experience but moot point.)

Virgin are now wholly American owned so this makes sense, to align with Delta etc.

Earn your x0000 miles or x Status credits between Jan 1 and December 31 in any calendar year and that was the only clock that counted.

So all United Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K members each year were determined on flights between those dates.

Take the flights in 2016, and your Status was then confirmed, and good for all 2017, and indeed until end Jan 2018 etc. The extra month was always just a courtesy.

Get the flights done in EARLY year, and you then had all 2016, all 2017 and a month of 2018 as that Elite level. Go up a status level in any calendar year and nothing changes except the colour of your card.

Incredibly simple for EVERYONE to follow. :D

This variable Anniversary date for 2 plats in the house, with anniversary dates 6 months apart was a nightmare to follow with upgrades and pooling etc. For us anyway.

There is a good reason America has used calendar years for decades for Hotel and Airline Elite status - it makes SENSE!

I guess 900 million American Hotel and Airline plan members must all be wrong.

Anyway the obvious FACT Virgin has chosen a common Feb 28 to extend date, no matter what your Velocity Anniversary, points in that direction.

Thank Goodness a common sense system appears to be underway. Yawn away.

If VA aren’t going to survive 2021 as you have predicted does it really matter what date the status extension ends?

Another thread just like the Hilton one, so off to the email account and sure enough another well received email. By my calculation Hilton WP extension and VA WP extension into early 2023 without any effort or flights.

BTW @ozstamps it is most likely time to get over how important you think you are. Why bother to bold and increase font size on social media, who cares what you are posting from emails in 2016/17/18. Covid hit in 2020

I posted no emails from 2016/17/18. Your reading skills are sadly lacking.

I was simply pointing out for the benefit of the many who have only experienced the kooky Velocity Status periods shuffle, that for 40 or 50 years all US plans have been CALENDAR YEAR, and how it works,

Looks like Virgin have now finally fallen in line, whether you like it or not.

A simple to follow system for everyone. And clearly it works well and efficiently.

The post immediately above mine proves this loopy "review date" system of part year shuffles confuses many.

Make it a year for all and all can follow it. Hilton just sent me an email to say my Diamond Status is good for an extra year. And I bet the identical email went to ALL Hilton members - and will read word perfect to yours. Not 365 different emails.

Try using accepted conventions if you are reposting from a cut and paste

I assume it's not a coincidence that this extension only covers people with a review date up to 30 April 2022, given those who took advantage of the Discover Gold offer will have a review date beyond this (mine is 28 May 2022). FWIW I completed the challenge in January but still got given a May review date.

If you put half as much effort in to marking a date on a calendar as your anniversary date as you do bolding selected words in your posts, there would be no problem....

By the way a calendar year is just a human construct as well........

I received the Gold 28 Feb '23 extension. Hard to be mad when I haven't boarded VA metal in over 18 months.

I'm a fan of flexible anniversary. I'm also a fan of clean legible post formatting. I guess it's true that there's no accounting for taste!

There are almost no circumstances where VA's system of rolling review works out worse for a customer than a fixed annual period, but it is not unusual for VA's system to work out much better for the customer. You say VA's system "confuses many", but I'm not sure what you base that on. IMHO, it's very simple, and almost always advantageous for members.

There is also no indication that VA is moving away from this system. While the latest initiative will mean a lot of people have the same review date for now, unless they change the fundamental basis of how status is retained, this will be just temporary.

Getting back to the point - someone mentioned gifting gold/platinum - does anyone know how this works in present circumstances? In normal times, this required an extra 500 or 1000 SCs over and above the SCs required to retain Platinum. Now that we have automatically retained Platinum, does this mean that we just need 800 or 1000 to gift status, or will we still need 1300/1800?
