General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Wasn’t sure about this one so I did a “phone a friend”

There is little consensus as to the cause of stroke in the younger ICU population with Covid. They don’t have the usual diseased arteries of the older population.
There are theories: cytokines storm or a pro inflammatory statements being one of them, other include an increased tendency for blood clots to form, another is injury of the blood vessel walls by the virus.

Each treatment is different including antivirals, anti clotting, anti inflammatory (anticytokines or steroi_s).

I get that people want to hold on to whatever morsel of good news there is. But I would caution that a lot of “news” are not based on robust analyses.
I am in the who cares category. I don’t want depressing facts I prefer to believe outcomes are better. And I still believe they are......

We still have the problem that the media are still accentuating the negatives. So a monthe ago it was all about the record numbers of new cases in the USA.This month it is all about the record hospital admissions in the USA.They just leave out the part that it appears new cases are levelling out and appear to be starting to drop.

Then all the headlines about new variant cases-1 appears here,2 in another state,4 in cCnada etc.Plus the speculation about how infective it is and whether the vaccines will still work when there still is a lot more work to be done. Here is the BMJ summary from last week.

It takes over a week to form antibodies so this isn't a surprising find.
Though I have posted before the link where full protection with the Pfizer vaccine kicks in at about the 28 day mark.
Of course these cases Bring back the OTP press reporting about the effects of the vaccine.

The coronavirus vaccine made by Pfizer and BioNTech provides strong protection against Covid-19 within about 10 days of the first dose, according to documents published on Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration before a meeting of its vaccine advisory group.

The finding is one of several significant new results featured in the briefing materials, which include more than 100 pages of data analyses from the agency and from Pfizer. Last month, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their two-dose vaccine had an efficacy rate of 95 percent after two doses administered three weeks apart. The new analyses show that the protection starts kicking in far earlier.

Of course further down the article is a bit different piece of evidence.
The efficacy of the vaccine after the first dose is about 52 percent, according to Dr. William C. Gruber, senior vice president of Pfizer Vaccine Clinical Research and Development. After the second dose, that rises to about 95 percent. “Two doses of vaccine provide maximum protection,” he said.

More of England has gone into Tier 4. No announcement made today on a new Tier 5, so guess we'll see what happens in the new year. Pretty much most of England now in 'lockdown'. I guess we call this one lockdown 3.0? I don't know, I've lost count :)

Extremely busy at work with all that's going on, so thankfully don't have too much time to sit and think about it. Trying to be cheery about it all but as you'll have noticed from most of my posts over the last few weeks...... it's a bit of a struggle! Perhaps some self-isolation from AFF (and online forums, news etc. in general) is required.

I noticed that, which was why I was trying to be positive and supportive until people with no ability to read an emotional situation leapt in with all sorts of depressing arguments. Just hang in and it will get better as the vaccines take effect and Spring arrives.

Lockdown 1.0 I got through .... not very well. Lockdown 2.0 I absolutely killed it, came out very positive. This one, not so much. The main difference between the 3 is that 1 and 3 were....... undated (no known end) whereas 2.0 had a specific start/end. Maybe that's it? Or maybe it's just the time of year. Who knows. Gotta get back into that regular exercise and positive thinking!

Definitely exercise helps and I very much believe this is the final stretch. UK is going to be using Oxford as well as Pfizer vaccines and looking to vaccine 2 million per week. The current lockdown will put a damper on the outbreak and between that and the vaccines I just don’t see this lockdown being as bad as lockdown 1. Just keep looking forward to the Spring - which you have to do in England anyway! You are through the winter solstice, so those days are getting longer :)

Indeed, sunset was after 4pk today! No one is following the rules so Lockdown or not I doubt we'll see the fall as much as lockdown 1. They're complaining about hospital beds yet there is no sign of the Nightingale hospital being spun into action that I'm aware of ... It would be good if they could accelerate vaccination numbers, at last count I think we were approaching 650,000 people vaccinated (or on their first round) and that's taken 3 weeks. The US is progressing much quicker but I guess they have more local supply.

Now that they are starting to use the Oxford vaccine I think you will see it speed up - much easier to deal with.

I just saw a thing on the vaccinations in Florida, where they had a very limited supply but told people just to turn up, no appointments, so they had people queuing from 1am just to be sure they could get it :)

The Oxford vaccine is rolling out Monday in UK with the plan to have everyone vaccinated by their Spring. My Aunt and Uncle in the UK, in their nineties, living in Oxford have had both immunisations done now. No side effects at all. They feel blessed.

Yes, I have stopped watching all TV news, or at least the first 10-15 mins. There are abt 200 countries in the world, every day there will be a record number of daily cases, record number of deaths, record number of hospitalisations in one country, or state or the other that's breathlessly reported. I suspect the reporting on the USA will change in tone next month ;).

On a different tack, I never listen to Premiers' press conferences, but did for Premier Berejiklian yesterday, as I was in my car in an area where there was only ABC News Radio clear. I wonder if she is like that every time? Her opening statement was very long, complex and what I could tell was the new information got buried in ultra detail and endless platitudes about how NSW people are doing the right thing etc. And her rising inflection at the end of many sentences got really irritating. Her answers to questions were similarly full of platitudes interspersed with what seemed to be the answer to the question.

At least there’s an increasing number of countries rolling out the vax. Wish we were in the same boat.
