General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

I went into a really cheap shop the other day as I wanted a little chocolate fix for $.50. She wouldn’t accept a card and I said that I didn’t have any cash and besides they’re not supposed to accept cash and she said well it’s $10 for a card minimum.
So she said just take the chocolate. 🙂

It's disappointing to see the proliferation of so many articles and 'news' commentary against social distancing. Most seem to seize on just the smallest thing - like the 'ban' on couples seeing each other in Victoria (quickly reversed, although I don't know why) - as a reason to argue the whole thing is a sham.

Do they not see the news in Italy, Spain, Europe, Uk, USA?

No. This is not the typical flu we can all get vaccinated against. 1000 people dying a day in those countries.

Judging by the comments left with many articles, it seems like a fair proportion of the public agree that we should all just carry on life as normal. Because like, two months of not going to a rave, or a bar, is worth dying for.
Honestly - the idiots on cruise critic are so lacking awareness it doesn't surprise me. They don't seem to even be aware of what is happening in NY unless they live there. Asking stupid questions as to how likely a May - June cruise is likely to go ahead.

Quite pathetic. But I'm not seeing them (thank goodness). Are the articles facebook, twitter (which I'm not on), or Australia news outlets? I'm not after links :) , just curious.

It seems to be all over the place now, news.com(.au) being an example, and Joe Hildebrand leading the cause on that particular site. Be he's also on Studio10, so expect the same there. The comments are 99% in support of Joe's position.

Thanks, but meh. I subscribe to the Oz, courtesy of the Uni, but just stick to the news articles - never read any comments.

Really?
This is from his article today.
"Of course, I completely understand and support the need to manage the rise in coronavirus cases to stop the hospital system from being overrun. If that should happen, we will go from the unhappy tally of inevitable deaths to the more tragic count of avoidable ones.

And like most people I am abiding by the social restrictions and putting my faith in both levels of government acting on the sum of expert advice."

What he railed about was Dan Andrews saying couples who lived apart could not see each other. You don't have to be much of a civil liberties supporter to think that was outrageous.Dan then backtracked on that.

It's a common technique - to sandwich the true purpose among something more palatable. I don't think anyone is seriously concerned that temporary measures to stop the spread of a virus are the beginning of the end of a democratic society.

And exactly what was he seriously concerned with other than the decision by the Premier I referred to? Doesn't seem like you have read the piece.

And Happy Birthday @Flashback - I could do with some chocolate cake today. I enjoy baking but it's hard when you're by yourself as you have to eat it all and I don't need cake at the moment.

Mrs FB has you covered then! Given it's only 24 hours later...... I don't think there's going to be any problem in this one going. Usually though, agree - always difficult when there's only 1 or 2 of you!

Left it in the fridge overnight, interestingly you seem to get more of the Guinness taste from it when eating it cold.

He was using the decision by the premier as an example of restrictions on social liberty on a broader scale. Plus, for good measure, trying to downplay the seriousness of covid by saying people die anyway from other causes and so the whole raft of measures are an afront to society.

The couple of sentences at the beginning are simply to contextualise how reasonable he is before launching into the opinion piece.

Why on earth would people be abusing hospital staff?

'Not the way Aussies behave': Minister blows up at people abusing nurses amid coronavirus pandemic
The hospital staff caught them stealing hospital supplies?

Its very sad (and also disturbing). Surely these health workers have enough stress in their lives with Covid-19 at present without this abhorrent behaviour.

I see today VIC has followed the lead of WA in providing accommodation in hotels for health workers away from their families if they are worried they are infected (although WA went further to including all health workers in hospitals regardless of health status)

You know its coming but GST to be raised in about a years time to pay for the bail out.
Also I would think there will be a tax added to anything imported into Australia, and maybe have an extra tax from anything coming from China.
Also I wonder whether the AFL will send all the teams to NT to have a competition, means we can all watch the games on TV over the weekend.
NRL is looking to set up a competition of all 16 teams somewhere in Queensland, not sure if the New Zealand Warriors will continue but who knows.
Rugby Super 15 is probably likely to have a major change in the competition next year.

I vote for a 50% "Corona tax" on anything coming out of China for the next few years.... I am not an expert in these things, and I acknowledge that China has allowed us all to live with myriad trinkets at bare bones cost. But I want a change to the status quo.

I do not know about those who you refer to.

However I do know my niece, who is a nurse, just over a week ago was abused in a supermarket and she indicated to us her family and friends (via Facebook to only these categories) that this was not the first time.

Some Brit think tank - whatever that is, wants to sue for 6.5 trillion.
