Putting down the cigarettes is great advice, pandemic or not.

Must...Fly!, friends inform me that one of the major groups 'at risk' are smokers, and attribute higher death rates among males to this: mainland China, Iran and so on. Credible?

It's a respiratory illness, anyone with a chronic respiratory condition is at increased risk.

Many have little choice in their risk profile. Smokers do - well that's my opinion, anyway.

Mrs FB is on the train into work today, usually fights for the last seat...... today has a whole carriage to herself.

Reports are that the London Underground has been very quiet too.

She works for a GOV department, so they're offered WFH options but have been asked to come in if they can due to the work going on around the crisis. The biggest risk is the journey to/from the office, given that offices in general are quieter anyway so given Mrs FB gets her own private carriage into the office should be OK. Hands to be washed before/after as well in case any nasties are left on the seats/doors etc.

Australia closing its borders to foreign nationals at 9pm Friday night.
NZ will do likewise from midnight tonight

Almost, but to be pedantic .. closing borders to foreign nationals who are not permanent residents of Australia, so not all foreign nationals, just 99.999% of them.

Does anyone know what generally happens with airline crew when the border is closed? My parents are due to fly out on Monday 23 March on CX. The flight is still listed as operating. How do they get the crew to fly it if they can't come in?

Flight crew are not banned. Ditto for crews of merchant ships.

Note too that freight (ie test kits and ventilators that have been bought) will still be flown in, and I assume out.

Let's not forget the real tragedy here, with my folks having to can their trip to the UK that means my care package isn't arriving. Yes, you read that right! No chicken salt, Twisties, ah...... could life get any worse!? ;)

Of course I jest, but the suffering is real! Twisties don't travel well by box unless coming by sea.

Hang on a minute. It says non citizen and non resident. I don't read that as mutually exclusive... I.e. I'm not resident but I am a citizen therefore I could enter?

Very hard to get something accurate from the media, as really very few people would be interested in the distinction. Some of us have a vested interest in understanding exactly what is meant. From Canberra Times this quote seems to be quite clear:
Australia has closed its borders to anyone who is not a citizen, a permanent resident or their immediate family....

Ok. Wrong thread. I'm happy to post five packs of fruchocs. JT and i love to travel. Three more. PM with details of addresses.
