An interesting report from the Victorian Coroners Office confirming no increase in the suicide rate during the lockdown periods so far. They have also, sensibly, added the caveat that "That's not a reason to be complacent. There is still a need to provide support and assistance to people who are clearly struggling through this period,"

Confirms my suspicions and a few posts I've previously made on the subject.

YES there is a large amount of stress, YES more people than usual are suffering,. YES calls are up significantly and the mental services need strengthening (they have always needed that, well before covid).

But NO the doom and gloom and disastrous finger in the air predictions of the various "experts" and armchair pundits of a huge calamity are not any better than the dozens of "experts" that come out of the woodwork and forecast a housing collapse of 30-50% every 12-18 months for the last 60+ years.

The bureau of statistics doesn't publish suicides monthly, but they do death totals and the rate for Victoria has not increased beyond a margin of error on the average for the last five years.

The situation may deteriorate somewhat when job keeper ends, but not to the extent of the various forecasts that have been published over recent months

I dont think it will impact for another few months when the reality of jobkeeper ending and no job kicks in.
 
Except that the modelling for suicides is that the increase may be over 5 years.The longer the lockdowns the greater the chance of an increase.
And of course that report doesn't mean there haven't been suicides because of the lockdown/quarantine as we already know of at least 1 in hotel quarantine in Victoria.

Has the coroner made a finding on that already? A suicide in quarantine does not mean it was triggered by or related to the quarantine.

Oh the impact is real and its here today, help lines are allegedly up 40+% in some cases. But some really worthwhile but well overdue funding has been allocated.

My totally unsubstantiated gut feel is the real breakthrough is tele-health. You can sit in the anonymity of your own home and have a full and frank discussion without facing your adviser or waiting in a waiting room with the stigmatisation that "oh he/she has got you know those mental problems"

WFH would also give an opportunity to get help without having to explain to someone why you are leaving work for a couple hours and come back all red eyed etc.

You need to wear more than just a mask to prevent covid. :D

French health authorities have warned of a 'very worrying' outbreak of coronavirus at a famous nudist resort in the south of the country.

At least 95 people at the resort of Cap d'Agde, 30 miles south of Montpellier, have tested positive for the virus so far - with more results due this week.

That is in addition to an estimated 50 people who reported falling ill after returning home from the holiday village.
