Could be the case, but as you say it is anecdotal and having had an EV for 4 years and hung out in a few FB groups I'm not seeing that - but I'm not an insurer so I don't have their insight. I'm mindful that a lot of the "lore" around EVs at the moment comes from ignorance, with people still thinking that battery replacements are common or that EV fires are a regular occurrence despite no evidence of any of these assumptions existing. Actually being part of the community, an event which results in a HV battery replacement or fire would be BIG news as it would suggest that these myths might actually have legs and yet the truth is that it is as mundane as any other car community. This is anecdotal only, but from what I’ve been told it is accident repair. Any damage whatsoever to the battery is likely to lead to a battery replacement. This can occur even with a relatively minor fender bender that might be ignored in an “equivalent” ICE car.
As an aside for EV drivers, it is well worth reporting an incident to your insurer, even if you think it is minor, in case the battery is impacted in any way.
Speaking from my own anecdotal observations I'm seeing more and more big SUVs and American trucks on the road, so I guess my little sedan will be safe with it's structural underfloor battery... my glass roof on the other hand
