Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

Well, my first degree wasn't in programming per se, but in pure mathematics, so I've been exposed to a wide variety of stuff that most normal folk can't even be bothered to contemplate.

Well, you guys can prove Fermat's Last Theorem, but you can't prove or disprove P = NP. :p

Pure mathematics gives me a headache. I learnt enough maths for engineering and IT, and that's good enough for me! (I hate trigonometric integrals... I have to pull out Wolfram or Maple...)

Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

My God, that is so unbelievably nerdy, I think I'm going to choke. The sad thing is that it made me smile...

Dork alert! :D

Well.... what should I say? "I gotcha!", "Look who's talking!", "Sucked in!" or "Thank you - I'll be here all night. Please try the fish and remember to tip your waitress!" :p

Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

...and yet it is the sales team that are most richly rewarded. Meanwhile the delivery team has to move heaven and earth and the cops all the blame. None of this is unique to the participants in this project.

Yep those sales team would do anything to get a sale, and get all the big fat juicy commissions/bonus. The delivery team ended up working at 16 hour day 7 days per week to deliver almost impossible projects ...... Too bad I am not good in sales (ie BSing) .....

Touché.

The US$1M prize offered by the Clay Mathematics Institute to the person/team who calculates a solution is barely enough to justify dedicating a lifetime's work to the problem.

All I have to say is there are 10 types of people in this world....

Those that understand binary.

And those that don't.

No I didn't hand-write it ;) I'm not that nerdy!

Back to the original topic (to try and get things back on track), it will be interesting to see when this project is finished what the advantages are to FF'ers. Eg: Faster crediting of points (even though they're pretty fast now) or additional flexibility with FF accounts.

Yes, mainly SQL \ C#... I'm just so glad I've been able to combine my love of programming with my love of travel and then call it a job...

The thread on how AFF may have a 'blokey' culture has nothing on this thread - which incontrovertibly proves that AFF is home to some of the nerdiest of the nerdy! (Hard to be blokey and nerdy at the same time...)

Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

Well I hope they don't fall for the same trick the formerly-former-former-former project manager did at a former employer of mine.

IT : Hi. We want a system to pull together all our financial and CRM systems.
Oracle : We can help you.
IT : Excellent
Oracle : In fact, we are just about to roll out our new version of the core OS which we will give you for the same price as the current one - you'll be the first customer to have it!
IT : WOW! Fantastic! The first you say? Brilliant!!!

And then we suffer non-stop bugs, fixes, patches, re-fixes and the project manager rightfully gets a big boot out the door.

And Oracle get to charge a customer for "consultancy" when they're really just "debugging".

And I couldn't code without a book at my elbow now, but I started out in original Pascal, the COBOL and SQL.

Then OOP came in and I was like WTF, mate!?!

Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

anything that involves IBM and Oracle involvement-
be very, very concerned....

Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

But the implementation should give them additional flexibility and ability to do things better/faster etc. So there will be benefits (and also possible disadvantages if certain loopholes can be closed) to FF'ers from the project.

An interesting quote I heard yesterday was something along the lines of:
"Slashing the budget of IT projects is crazy as they are often implemented to save money".

That's something that has been attempted in the company I work for. We are trying to move all 500 sites around the world onto one common platform, one site (more or less) at a time, with the intention of moving from 20 software/platform providers to 1.

BUT, each implementation project is expected to have a budget of about $3.20 (and woe betide you if you go over budget!), take no more than 2 hours to do, all the while having to fill in various Powerpoint presentations, questionaires and other templates.

But hey, I'm not bitter:p

Re: Qantas Frequent flyer out of the stone age

An interesting quote I heard yesterday was something along the lines of:

Problem is most accountants see IT as a cost centre, not a business enabler... Furthermore slashed IT budgets gives an instant improvement on the bottom line, and yet the computers still all work the next day in the eye's of the accountants...

Problem is it takes months for the true effects of a slashed IT budget to start having an affect on the business, and by that time it'll cost much more to get things back on track that had they simply left the IT budget alone...
