General Medical issues thread

Daughter not quite 11 months but the past week or so has been waking up at 3-4 times a night screaming. During the day she is fine.

I'm guessing it's either acid reflux or nightmares? Wouldn't she be a little too young for nightmares? In regards to diagnosing acid reflux what sort of test would be required?

JohnK, has she started on new foods over the last week? Or could it be a new tooth coming through giving her pain? Could she be cold? (MasterC hates being covered by a blanket so we have to dress him in many layers for sleeping otherwise he will wake up cold).

Thanks LadyC.

She still coughs at night. Not sure if she hasn't recovered from previous virus (now ~3 weeks) or has new virus.

No real new foods as my wife usually feeds her a variety of foods. Boiled egg, avocado, cheese, loves lamb, pork, banana and some vegetables here and there.

She has 4 teeth and more could be coming through.

She is very hyperactive and by the time she goes to sleep she is very hot so no blanket early on but then a blanket when she is in deep sleep.

A real mystery.

If there is no new food then unlikely to be acid reflux. You might just need to ride it out for a bit longer to see if it stops in time. It would be very helpful if they could tell us what the problem is though!

I was meant to go and have an MRI on my head last week. I got as far as lying on the table but with all the 'stuff' surrounding my head I was freaking out and so I bailed out.

Funny our differing reactions to MRIs.
I had one last week and another some months back.
I am a fan of the band Hawkwind's 1973 space-rock album "A Space Ritual", so that when I'm in the MRI listening to the weird sounds, I'm tapping my toes and fingers, as one part reminds me of the song "Brainstorm", another is very similar to "Lord of Light", and so on. I just kept humming away at the tunes, and I was slightly disappointed when the MRI was over, as I had been enjoying it.
Regards,
Renato

It sounds like I am istening to African drumbeat music which makes the MRI pass relatively quickly. Whilst a GP friend of mine was distressed to develop tinnitus. I must ask him if he still has it.

Daughter has never been the best of sleepers. She falls asleep ok in the daytime but struggles to fall asleep at night. She constantly opens eye to check her mother is there. And sometimes she gets up and looks around and goes back to sleep.

Babies are indeed interesting and mysterious.

Whilst I am sure there are some magical unicorn babies out there who sleep for 10-12 hours straight, it's pretty normal for them to wake a number of times through the night. MasterC didn't sleep through until he was 3 years old and even now he will regularly wake up 3 hours in if I am not there.

Just when you think you know whats going on, they change it up on you!

Maybe they have different beats and rythms in the different machines?
Interesting how you basically do the same as me in the MRI.
Cheers,
Renato

I once walked into to an MRI room. I had taken out my wallet previously but had forgotten I had a credit card (pre RFID paywave)separately in my trouser pocket. Realised as soon as I stepped over the threshold.

The magnetic stripe was completely wiped..

Ah have you thought that the MRI machine doesn't actually do anything and all the weird noises are coming from the headphones? :)

When the first MRI machine was installed at the hospital I was working in It was upstairs from my office.I brought an old spade to work and demonstrated how it really was a magnetic machine-the spade would gravitate to the roof.Unfortunately they then installed the sheiding and my party trick was no more.

Daughter had hip surgery....again. Surgeon found some adhesions where the capsule was stuck to the labral cartilage and femur and also a rogue piece of hardened bone sticking up. Removed them all so hopefully this will fix it. Didn't do the tendon release and not convinced that the problem is emanating from that. Fingers crossed.

Another cold again? Blocked nose. Pinched nerve/muscle mid-right spine yesterday and now better but have another pinched nerve/muscle on lower left side with very limited movement. Very uncomfortable.

This happens so often in winter and it's been a long winter.

Went to see my skin cancer guy today for my 6 monthly check up. Only 2 SCC's to be cut out this time. That's about 40 Carcinomas all up now

I had a dermatologist visit last week. As a teen I never sunbaked as I am fair skinned and all I did in the sun was burned. Avoidance paid off as not one skin cancer yet; Dad unfortunately due to his service in the navy and that silly cap they wear onboard was riddled with them and lost an ear.

Father picked up daughter from hospital this morning and brought her here for a little while. She wanted to go over to Maple & Clove (our neighbourhood coffee shop just over the road) for a coffee then she went home for a sleep. Is feeling OK but is not allowed to weight bear yet so is hopping along on her crutches again. She has really had her money's worth out of them!
