General Medical issues thread

MrP has this. Constant saline irrigation and using the real sudafed before flights is the treatment keeping him going. Thank goodness Dubai pharmacies sell the proper decongestants so we stock up. The stuff they pass off here these days is no better than a placebo.
Sudafed does nothing for me unfortunately.

Dont stock up too much lest it be called a "stash"
If your science lab is only restricted to your fridge you should be Ok.

Do you have any tips for preventing the infamous runner's knee? I am starting to run longer distances and I just fear that my knees will not hold up.

Ouch! I can almost feel it.
Sounds very easy to do.
tearing a ligament is easy as well. Was on Dunk island and getting into a surf ski. Didn't want to make a fool of myself by tipping it over. So delicately sat on it and then swung my legs over. Little bit of pain, but played around for awhile but then had trouble walking. After coming back to Canberra and X-rays everyone kept saying no problem. Eventually my GP sent me off to an orthopaedic surgeon. He din't think there was much wrong, but decided to do an arthroscopy in case there was something that needed a minor repair. Mr FM got a phonecall while I was on the operating table saying the ligament (ACL) was totally broken and should they do a reconstruction. :)

The surgeon afterwards kept on telling me how wonderful it was that they could now perform that surgery successfully on someone as old as me (I was 50 at the time). Apparently they used to have a cutoff of around 45 :)

Monica932 my cousin used to do full triathlons and marathons and now that he is older and retired he says he wishes he had only ridden bikes and swum. He was an orthopedic surgeon so he knows the pounding from long distance running has caused wear and tear.

I sympathise with the knee injury sufferers - as I sit here with one knee covered in Rock Tape and an ice pack on the other...

Left knee (taped) is a suspected lateral meniscus tear. Since taping I can actually roll over in bed without significant pain in it.

Right knee was just jealous of the attention. I'm hypermobile and lock my knees back and the other day I stepped back on a funny angle, knee locked back and the fat pad got stuck in the joint. Took 3 days to settle and since then I've had a few little twinges where it just jams a little again.

Strictly speaking a dislocation of the meniscus cartilage of the knee joint.
Much more common in females
Caused by a sudden twisting motion of the knee during weightbearing - usually from turning around. Not an injury due to a fall or slip or trip.

Foot anchored on ground = locks tibia against rotation. Rotation of the femur from torso turning catches the meniscus between the femur and tibia to dislocate.
Very painful.
so if the right leg = usually caused by twisting to the left while right leg firmly planted on the ground dislocating the inside meniscus.
Exactly what happened and that's the precise medical diagnosis. She's turned up this morning bandaged and off to GP and physio. Gave me a box of chocs for looking after her - that's easy when one knows what to do and we have a good relationship. Now if only my neighbours were cut from the same cloth :o :p

My sister (60+yo) who runs marathons is not a happy girl at the moment. She did a 20km training run on sunday without issue but then later slipped when walking the dogs. A nasty collies' fracture of her left wrist. Six weeks in plaster then twelve months to fully repair.

Dr said she could run City to Surf this weekend and she laughed at him as she is in pain walking let alone running in a pack of others who largely have no running etiquette.

Darn has it come around again. Always miss it. The Apple Watch didn't remind me to sign up. Maybe it thinks I don't need to being the healthy specimen that I am. Ah well try to remember for next year:mrgreen::mrgreen::mrgreen:

Methinks you are setting it to forget ;)

It's not illegal you know!

Though I find its effect is not as profound when it's not in Codral for some reason. I'm dreading the upcoming codeine ban. It's going to make having a cold or my period into absolute torture for me.

Intersting that you can get the real stuff in Dubai. I used to use one pill before each flight. But one day, each tablet started sending my blood pressure through the roof. Fortunately, I found that Spraytish, and other nasal sprays with the same ingredients as it, did nearly as good a job as Sudafed for flights.

The other thing I always pick up at Boots pharmac_ in Dubai airport is tubes of anti-histamine cream, which are the best thing for ant bites, wasp bites or any other insect bite. Since the cream was made a prescription item in Australia (at the same time that oral anti-histamines were made non-prescrition items) no one manufactures it here, and you can go from chemist to chemist and no one can fill the prescription for anti-histamine cream.
Regards,
Renato

MrP uses the nasal sprays with every flight too plus twice daily sinus cleanse. He really should have the surgery.
