General Medical issues thread

We are doing biliary/renal ultrasound now.

I believe she was suffering from the flu. GP thinks it may have been flu but hospital thinks bacterial infection all along. She was up and about Tuesday and almost ready to come to Brisbane. Then yesterday she was worse. The infection may have got into the bloodstream.

In saying that I think wife has improved today with the antibiotics. It's just scary stuff when you don't know what's going on.

They may have been directed to check the bile ducts and kidneys as a result of something in the blood tests
Best wishes!!

Wife needed to be fasting. She was not informed. Even imaging got it wrong over the phone saying she needed to drink 1 litre of water. Have to wait until tomorrow now.

A few things don't sit right with me.

Should the doctor at the medical clinic have picked this up on Sunday instead of writing it off as flu?

When they went to hospital yesterday one of the doctors angrily said "What is she doing here? There's nothing wrong with her she should go home." I'd like to find out who said that to my wife because I want to report them to AMA. They should be looking for a different profession as they have no idea how to perform their current profession.

No point reporting them to the AMA. They do not have any jurisdiction over doctors.
If you want to complain then I would suggest complaining to the Hospital where she was treated and/or the HCCC (Health Care Complaints Commission).

Father's bone pain got so bad last week we had to call an ambulance to get him admitted as he couldn't walk.

Thankfully he is now receiving immediate treatment for his Cancer with radiotherapy/radiation (not sure which one) and has been given the implant for Goserlin Acetate (Zoladex) in addition to his Bicalumtide.

He says he feels less pain and is sleeping well.

Their is also a trial for Men with advanced prostate Cancer at Peter Mac. I am hopeful he is eligible to participate. Could be a game changer if you have advanced prostate Cancer.

My neighbour who had prostate cancer said the bone pain was the worst.

Luckily I have not had any pain that I can recall associated with my cancer, except the post-op pain. However, I do have some arthritic pain in wrists, r foot and lower spine, but it won't be anything like that your father is experiencing WTW. I feel for him.

I hear you JohnK
medicine is not a "go see doctor, take a pill and get better." More or less it's a work in progress. Much in medicine is "observe, come back if not better". Often when you do come back a completely different course of treatment may be instituted. And if you get better is it because or in spite of the treatment?

Dont worry, Doctors are just as frustrated and exasperated as their patients too. Usually because the governent seeks to tell them what to do or tie one hand behind their back by limiting healthcare resources

Oh boy do I wish it was. Wife has been through a lot. She has suffered not that long ago with pregnancy and birth.

Anyway the hospital just called. Urine test results confirm UTI. Ciprofloxacin is the wrong antibiotic which explains why wife not improving. Will pick up ultrasound in 30 minutes and off to GP who will prescribe the correct antibiotic. Fingers crossed.

The correct antibiotic should make her feel better fairly quickly.

Another flu outbreak at a nursing home kills 7.

If you're in a high risk group, it is still not too late to get the flu vaccine. Free for certain people and only about $10-20 for others.

The Department of Health and Human Services said the retirement village had 146 residents and 200 staff, with 123 people affected by flu during an outbreak over the past few weeks.
The seven residents who died were aged between 70 and 94, and had other conditions that made them particularly susceptible.

Lots of discussion in Over Sixty on shingles. We had our shots in the US because it was not available in Australia about 8 years ago. Sure it is free at 70 but we were both under 60 when the Ralph's pharmac_ was able to give us the shot. So many of our friends are having their lives messed up by the nerve ending pain that can follow the blisters/rash.

Apparently that's plain old Amoxycillin.

Interesting situation. Gall bladder ultrasound shows sludge around the gall bladder. That part of the body is tender. Urine test confirms some sort of UTI but not bacterial. Viral? CRP = 400 which means body is fighting infection. Doctor says not serious but wife is still dizzy and doctor says she should go back to hospital where they'll put her on drip and give her antibiotics.

All very confusing to me but wife slowly up and about. See how she feels in morning.

Let's hope she is feeling much better soon.

we have finally gone and got prescriptions and will be having ours in the next week or so - mainly due to discussion on here. I have only known one person who had shingles, but it did knock her around. We are still under 70 (65 and 64), but we decided not to wait, as the vaccine is supposed to be more effective in your 60s.

TV adverts in the US recommend shingles shots from the age of 50 but that might be paid for or promoted by the vax distributor.

Now you make me feel guilty. It's something I have put off or rather not got around to :)
But then I do have a root canal coming up in a week or so.....

one thing at a time :). My root canal was actually really good - I had let the pain get so bad before doing something about it, that the root canal treatment was wonderful! People go on about how painful it is, but that was not my experience, although I do seem to have been left with an ongoing nerve problem, which may or may not have been caused by the root canal. Just bad luck though.
