General Medical issues thread

TV adverts in the US recommend shingles shots from the age of 50 but that might be paid for or promoted by the vax distributor.
CDC (USA) recommends over 60s get it. I think the over 60s is the vulnerable group and it doesn't seem to give total or life long immunity, so maybe it is felt you should get it closer to the time when you are likely to develop the disease. I wouldn't trust medical adverts in the USA as far as I can throw them (can you throw an ad?), however having said that, the one person I know who developed shingles did so in her 50s.

one thing at a time :). My root canal was actually really good - I had let the pain get so bad before doing something about it, that the root canal treatment was wonderful! People go on about how painful it is, but that was not my experience, although I do seem to have been left with an ongoing nerve problem, which may or may not have been caused by the root canal. Just bad luck though.
Yes, I am not really worried about it (apart from the sting of $2K+). I've had a couple in the past. The dentist has given me a list of suggested treatments for other teeth which will take a long period of time as well as dollars. :)

Bangkok! Fraction of the cost. Same quality as AU. And free holiday.

Missed 'em!
Did you blink?
Actually I don't remember reading them.
Oh yes I do...
Back OT

Have something similar going through the house at the moment. Could have started with daughter. :(
Seems to be better now....fingers crossed.

It is something I will look into. My brother goes there for his teeth work.

Thanks for the link. As I'm a bit of a woose, I will probably end up spending the money with the dentist here.:)
yes me too - I really like and trust our dentists and although they charge like a wounded bull, I reckon they are worth it.

You can get bad dentistry in Australia as well. Our longtime dentist retired some years ago, so we picked a random dentist near us. Mr FM had an implant done during this period. Then we weren't terribly happy, after a few years, so did some homework and moved to the ones we are with now. That dentist said the crown was crooked on the implant and suggested we contact the original dentist for rectification. However he had actually retired and would take no responsibility so hMr FM had to get the crown redone by our new dentist. So even in Australia it is worth checking out the dentists!

One warning about overseas dental work.Infection with multiresistant bugs is much more common in certain countries.A fellow we know well had his dental work done in India.Got a multiresistant bug and nearly died. The dental work itself was perfect.

Speaking of dodgy, not that we were, I think I will cross off the Medi Beauty Clinic in Sydney given the death of the owner at the hands of untrained staff and botched treatment. Sad for her but really.....

Truly awful but my thoughts were that thank goodness it wasn't a client. In our old offices in Melbourne Street North Adelaide - the Street of specialists - a young girl died from a botched cellulite job done by a qualified surgeon. Infection but she didn't notify the clinic of symptoms quickly enough so blood poisoning then death. It was next door to us and every news report and photo in the media showed our office in the frame. We had to clean up 'mess' deposited by our door every day for weeks.

Never thought I'd need the shingles vax for many decades, but got it recently at 32yo. Several of my workmates also did at around the same time (and age).

Hopefully that's it for me now! Stay away damn zoster virus ...

Can you get shingles twice.

Hopefully it will put a spotlight on the industry and better regulation. That the owner was comfortable letting someone lacking qualifications recognised here (studied dermatology overseas apparently - but not clear if it was actual medical qualification or cosmestic) and on a tourist visa perform the procedure makes you wonder what would have been done in the clinic.

The 'nurse' in the room was also not qualified according to an article I read - and administered the wrong dose of drugs.

It does astound me a little that people are prepared to put their health (and life it seems) into the hands of people other than fully qualified and registered medical practitioners.
