General Medical issues thread

spiral fracture means just that - the fracture line resembles a spiral along some part of the length of the bone. These heal the best rather than a break across the bone because the contact surface area in a spiral is greatest and tends to be more stable

Thankyou. That's good news to hear then. They are a bit stressed at the moment. The separate broken ankle sounds a bit trickier.

In daughter's case, it was a fall from her horse. She was living in Sydney and the horse was agisted out at Shane Rose's property near Camden. We drove down and collected her from Camden Hospital to bring her back to Canberra to see an ortho here and have surgery. It was lucky that Dios was agisted there as Shane was able to ride him for daughter and eventually bought him from her. We heard that the horse was eventually sold to an eventer in the US.
There was a bit of a stoush with the uni as she missed 2 weeks practice in the Vet Clinic there and the uni was deciding whether she would be eligible to graduate that year. In the end she had to do 2 extra weeks after the end of term. Sydney Uni graduation order was in order of merit and daughter came third (she was a bit annoyed at that), so why there was so much fuss I have no idea.
Daughter also doing Vet Science but at CSU Wagga.
Now she says she wants ME to bring her horse from home down to Wagga so she can ride it during the year. Apparently several of her Vet Science colleagues are also doing the same thing and there is agistment on the Uni grounds. Then at the end of academic year she wants ME to float the horse back home.
Just means 1000km round trip to bring horse down and 1000km round trip to bring it back home in a horse float.:evil:

Unlike Medicine, Vet students must complete their Pracs to meet minimum Vet Rego Board requirements during the degree because there is no internship after graduation in Vet.

Gotta love our kids expectations these days. Maybe we are too soft with them. :o

Is there such a thing as a 1 day flu? Hope so.
I had the flu last week. I went downhill rapidly from Wednesday afternoon. Visited the doc on Thursday afternoon in a pretty bad way (39.6 deg temp, banging headache etc.). Mrs NM had to drive me as I was not up to driving. He ordered a swab test to confirm if flu or a bad cold and prescribed amoxicillin in case of bacterial infection. Friday I was still very poor, temps, headaches etc. Saturday got a call from doc clinic confirming test result were positive for flu and to stop the amoxicillin as no need for it. I slowly and steadily improved on Saturday and Sunday. Back to docs as requested Monday morning for a check and spent no more than 3 mins with the doc - he could see just from the way I walked in that I was way better than when he saw me on Thursday.

So certainly was not a 1-day flu for me. But the worst of the symptoms were limited to 2 days, followed by a steady improvement. I still have the occasional dry cough (Tuesday afternoon), but no other symptoms. Given how long some have been knocked around by this flu, I consider myself fortunate. I was hit hard, but only for a short time. Will be considering flu shot next year.

I think not.
I would have given a finger for the opportunities I have been able to give my kids..
It's a busy complex world and offering support to a hard working aspirational offspring sends a positive message and is extremely rewarding.
A lazy uninterested subject who is out for whatever can be obtained for a minimum of effort is another situation altogether.
Do remember to offload neddy every five hours for a pee and to stretch his legs Quickstatus… :-)

Well yes but about 2 years ago between Sydney and Coonabarabran we let Mr Ed out for a Driver Reviver and he took off. Took almost hour to convince him the horse float anf not the New England highway is the place to be.
They pee in the float so lots of wood shavings etc.

Sorry to hear. Mine's going around in circles but not sure if the flu or cold. This the 3rd day now and I went from every muscle in my body aching and eyes burning first day to a dry cough second day and now a dry cough with blocked nose. Throat hurts when I cough. Worried about pneumonia even though I should be vaccinated.

I won't visit doctor yet as I'm not too bad.

JohnK keep your fluids up won't you?
Fluids are up. It's trying to keep up with this stupid infection that's frustrating. Changes every day. I'm not going to let it stop me.

Daughter is a worry though. Poor thing is struggling. Not sleeping and whinging non stop. Not much we can do. Nurofen reduces fever slightly and nasal sprays are like cough syrups. She's ok if you hold her but that's not possible all times of the day. Her mum's a wreck trying to recover from her own health issues and taking care of daughter.

Someone said they thought there was a light at the end of this tunnel.

I'm still waiting.......

But in reality JohnK, childhood infections are pretty much par for the course. Wait until she starts kindy. School. Chickenpox, colds, tummy upsets - all this joy awaits you. And I wont even go into what teenagers are all about.

not chickenpox - there's a vaccine now. But yes in general it takes years to get over all the childhood illnesses and then just when you think you are through the worst, they turn into teenagers and won't be seen in public with you :). However it is worth it in the long run, when you finally have an adult who loves you and even sometimes asks and listens to your advice. :).

There's a vaccine for everything these days.

We used to have chicken pox parties to get them over and done with. Didn't work for me - I was 30 when I got them but I did give them to my then 5 and 1 year old  A baby in nappies with chicken pox ain't great. So we had about 2 months of active pox in our household.

yes I have fairly horrific memories of chickenpox with the kids. Master FM came down with chickenpox just before Dr FM's Birthday when we were having around 25 little girls for a party at home. Fortunately one of my best friends had hers down with Chickenpox as well, so we ran 2 parties - one at home and one at my friend's for those with chickenpox :).

I would imagine nappies and chickenpox would be really hard - particularly trying to get them not to scratch - did you use mittens? I had them with chickenpox at 5 and 3 and then I think Ms FM was 5 when she got hers.
