General Medical issues thread

haha just remember you will still be the ATM machine long after they are able to fly the coop.
it is called the Bank of Mum and Dad these days :). Ms FM is currently paying off her honeymoon, her husband is paying off a car and so is Dr FM. We don't mind though - a practical way of giving them help, which saves on interest for them. They are very rigorous about paying us back.

Dr FM saw her accountant last month and told him her car was written off and we had advanced her the difference to allow her to buy a new one, without her getting a loan. He was very enthusiastic about the concept and suggested she use that form of financing as much as she could :). I really like what I have heard of her accountant - he is trying to get her to buy a second property as he feels she fritters too much money. :).

The pox?(Just kidding)
Gawd, nope. Did I mention teenagers? kidding again.
yes I have fairly horrific memories of chickenpox with the kids. Master FM came down with chickenpox just before Dr FM's Birthday when we were having around 25 little girls for a party at home. Fortunately one of my best friends had hers down with Chickenpox as well, so we ran 2 parties - one at home and one at my friend's for those with chickenpox :).

I would imagine nappies and chickenpox would be really hard - particularly trying to get them not to scratch - did you use mittens? I had them with chickenpox at 5 and 3 and then I think Ms FM was 5 when she got hers.

I think most of his were buried down where the sun don't shine and being a fussy kid he didnt like to go scratching down there. From memory it was October so he tended to go nappy-less when they were active. Lots of calamine baths etc.

I'm still waiting.......
For the light? I've since heard the globe has blown.

But in reality JohnK, childhood infections are pretty much par for the course. Wait until she starts kindy. School. Chickenpox, colds, tummy upsets - all this joy awaits you. And I wont even go into what teenagers are all about.
I know childhood infections are par for the course but you don't like to see them suffering. Never thought I'd say that but I'm in that position now.

Well. Don't for a moment think that feeling your kids pain disappears when they become adults. It's there for life. Get used to it.

i agree with Pushka - it never stops and in fact it is worse when they are adults. Childhood ailments are under your control to a certain extent - panadol, a cuddle. What they go through as adults can be worse as you have to watch their pain from medical and non medical events and do little except just be there for them if they want you and often they don't - they need to muddle through it themselves while you watch and worry. I have lost track of the number of sleepless nights I have had since they grew up...

However to be more positive the joy outweighs the grief

Daughter doing Year 1 Vet Science at CSU Wagga.

Massive timetable until end of Uni year
every day either 8-5 or 6.

I said well welcome to the real world.

Then they have to do 12 weeks farm work experience (even those who grew up on the farm are not exempt) by middle of year 3. Apparently so when they visit farms they have some idea of the goings on and don't look like a complete idiot.

At least she can drive a manual tractor and can reverse it. But can only drive an automatic car.

Of course it doesn't and it shouldn't. Though as an adult she can get over the colds/flus all by herself just like I am now.

Sydney was the same - it meant at least half holiday time was spent in a placement (in the first four years on properties) and in final year they were rotated through practices every 4 weeks.
Most of the time they had to find their own placements. From memory daughter had to do 2 weeks sheep, 2 weeks dairy, 2 weeks beef, 1 week chicken, 1 week pig, 4 weeks other (llama, goat etc).
Hope your daughter is enjoying the course.

Yes that's the same.

........

re 5 yr old NSW kid who died after being sent home from Hornsby hospital.
Very tragic but I'm have some information (which I won't /can't share) that suggests Hornsby did nothing wrong despite what the headlines would suggest. The second hospital did everything they could possibly do but to no avail. Fatalities are occurring this flu season. A flu pandemic is long overdue.

This years nasty flu keeps going. A 30 year old father sadly died on Fathers Day. The Influenza A (H3N2) strain was included in this years Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine but appears to have mutated, having slightly nullified the protection against that strain. Having said you can still get the Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine which should give some protection against the Influenza A (H3N2) strain.

A young Bacchus Marsh dad who died on Father's Day was the latest victim of the most widespread flu epidemic in 15 years.
Ben Ihlow's death came as an eighth person died after a flu outbreak at an aged-care facility in Victoria with 14 more facilities reporting outbreaks at the weekend.

Influenza A (H3N2) is the flu subtype that is running rampant throughout the country, especially in nursing homes.

Despite extensive study, scientists have been at a loss to forecast the viruses' evolution in any detail for decades.

Australia's killer flu: Calls for more immunisations as virus mutates

[h=2]The influenza virus strains included in the 2017 seasonal influenza vaccines are:[/h]
  • A (H1N1): an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09[SUP]*[/SUP] like virus
  • A (H3N2): an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2) like virus
  • B: a B/Brisbane/60/2008 like virus
  • B: a B/coughet/3073/2013 like virus

Which reminds me, how is your wife JohnK?
The good news is she's the only one of 6 people to miss the flu/cold. Mum still coughing wildly and I'm not much better and daughter still coughing but almost back to normal.

Wife seems to have shaken her infection. Still dizzy and headaches but that's probably due to low blood pressue. We'll check again with GP tomorrow.

Luckily our household has been the complete opposite. Not a single cough or sneeze or a single sheet of tissue used. No preemptive echineacea, Vit C etc. I was the only one who got flu shot as well. :p

Can't explain why.

Same here. No vit C, echineacea, flu shots, other home remedies or colds or flu for wife and self. Put it down to not using public transport, lift buttons, door handles in buildings occupied by large numbers of staff, rarely going to doctor's waiting rooms where unhealthy people gather.

I can. Luck but it goes well beyond that and most people would not understand so best left alone.

So root canal is done and dusted. Still waiting for the anaesthetic to wear off but I did manage a not too hot latte (and didn't dribble at all). :)
Next step will be an extraction where there is no bone holding the tooth (oops) but not for a few weeks.

I remember having a filling and as I couldn't feel much I thought all was fine to eat. So stupidly bought a steaming hot baked potato. Burnt my mouth so badly - way worse than when eating a pizza and the point bit catches the roof of your mouth.

Off to rheumatologist this arvo. All blood tests done a few weeks ago. Went to GP to get repeat referral and try prise out test results. On his PC he finds it hard to see results but did say thyroid low which I knew. He'd dropped me back from 200 a year ago and I'd skipped a few as well. Always know when I'm low as my nails don't grow.

Good luck with the rheumi. Hopefully all those blood tests are showing OK levels. Make sure you take your thyroid meds properly, woman! (Or I might come down and boss you around a bit )
