General Medical issues thread

Ok so there is fever. Can be anything but it is significant.
Need to have it checked out. Could just be flu/ other non significant infection but hard to say.
We did the tests last week and there was no sign of infection. I'm guessing this is the flu again from the weekend. Not going to be easy to check things out unless it involves a lengthy stay in hospital and that is not a desirable outcome.

When I got home earlier her temperature was 40.0°C which worried me. Then it was 39.9°C. Cold towel on forehead and 2 Panadol Osteo and checked temperature again at 10-15 minute intervals and it was 38.6°C, 37.5°C and then 36.4°C. I cooked lunch and she got up out of bed to eat which was good.

Will monitor again in a couple of hours when I get home from work. We are going back to Sysney tomorrow so hoping fever is not too bad.

This has been a tough year on the 3 of us. This is wife's 3 bout of cold/flu in 7 weeks. Daughter still coughing almost 7 weeks after catching the common cold that the 3 of us had early November.

Will be glad when this year is over.

Yes. Understand. But in a flash it can all go to carp. Mum was very healthy until she was 85. I took her overseas with me when she was 82. Then at 86 had her first stroke completely out of the blue. She recovered kind of from that then had to go to a nursing home. I loathed the place. She was there for 18 months and then died an awful death after a stroke even though on warfarin. I am a visual person and am still a bit haunted by those last 10 days. I plan on organising things when I see fit.
Watch ‘Still Alice’.
i really don’t want to go into a nursing home and I don’t want to carry on if my quality of life is bad. My family all know my wishes and what to do if there is a choice with resuscitation etc.

Have you done an advanced health directive? Then there is an enduring power of attorney. Before that a will.
It isn’t hard to complete these three documents but we used our lawyer.
I would rather that our wishes are protected but when you are gone only the beneficiaries are involved.
The advanced health directive is something that is promoted by our government in WA and probably most other States.

yep done everything. Got the wills and power of attorney done by a lawyer as we set up a testamentary trust. Also got the girls to divvy up the jewellery and then put the split into the wills as an addendum, so no fighting after I am gone. Basically tipped all the jewellery onto the bed and they took turns choosing. It was all very civilised, as they have quite different tastes. :). Dr FM likes the gaudy diamonds, while
Ms FM is more a pearls girl.

I'd suggest that, as far as the medical people are concerned, you haven't 'done everything' until you have an advance (nb. not 'advanced') health directive (aka 'living will') in place. Without it, they will have an obligation to do more than you may wish to keep you going...

I have done that as well :). Plus with a doctor daughter I am relying on her to see my wishes carried out.....

For the first time in my life I'm suffering from heat rash, not at all happy! Hope it doesn't affect upcoming trips to S.E. Asia.

The headaches started about a week ago. Probably tension headaches. Now they won't go away. Not fun.

After we had a financial discussion with our 2 sons they asked me who they could use to cash in the art and jewels. They don’t seem to have a sentimental bone in their bodies.
Pain management seems to be a big issue as we get older.

I told mum the other day I was going to sell all her framed crochet work. I'm sure I can get thousands for them, if not tens of thousands.

The look on her face was enough to deter me.

they are male - need girls to get sentimentality.......

Talking of pain management, have people here been stocking up on Codiene tablets and capsules before they become prescription items on 1st February?

My local Chemist Warehouse ran out of Panadiene and the generic version called Prodiene back at Christmas. They have only been able to offer the less popular Neurofen Plus since then (since one only gets 30 tablets instead of 40 for roughly the same price).

I think that if one lived in a rural area, where there isn't much Bulk Billing with GPs, one would be crazy not to stock up now - i.e. spend $10 a packet now, versus spending $60 out of pocket at a non-Bulk Billing Doctor plus $10 a packet after 1st February.
Cheers,
Renato

The only ones I’d think of is Mersyndol.

Panadeine Extra 40 caplets has been out of stock a long time. I've bought some Mersyndol and I'll buy some more generic stuff.

I still hate it that I have to run to the doctor everytime I need codeine. I don't need the lectures.

Hi John,
Maybe change your Doctor to a less preachy type? I don't mind when they are preachy about something real - like Neurophen not being much good for people as they turn 80. But when it is just a general Puritanical preachiness - that one will often not get from other more relaxed Doctors - then I'm not too happy.

A problem is that while one can still get the tablets from regular chemists, they often cost an awful lot more than from Chemist Warehouse. Many months back, I paid around $16 for 20 tablets of Mersyndol from one chemist, before I realised that they were around $11 for 40 tablets at Chemist Warehouse.
Cheers,
Renato
