Oh, and one of my projects is not going live in August now so looks like Cobber Pedy might be back on.

But neither of those reports prove a direct link with NAS and weight gain.
I am sure when you are out and about that you see obese people downing a hamburger washed down with a can of diet drink.I notice that all the time.
this discussion should probably all be moved to the medical thread.

I was reading an interesting article last week, which (to summarise heavily), said someone a bit overweight who ate healthily could be in better shape that someone who was thin but ate badly. That too much focus is being put on the actual weight. (Of course obese is a different issue).

I am probably a case in point. I have never liked meat much and ate quite little, particularly after the kids left home. Had drifted away from milk as it made me feel ill as I got older. Then when my cholesterol rose, started heavily restricting cheese and for some reason stopped eating eggs as well.

For quite a few years I have had a toothache in the upper jaw that was getting worse and I blamed it on a root canal. Then the lower teeth started aching. Dentists could find nothing - I even made my dentist do a filling which he felt was unnecessary. I was in quite severe pain - I even seriously thought about taking a panadol.
(And to put that into context all I used after an ACL reconstruction was panadol).

Was chatting to my GP and whining about my teeth and she suggested Trigeminal Neuralgia and sent me off to do some research (my GP trusts my research capability). Digging away I felt that it probably was Pre-TN and then more research led me to a link with Vitamin B12. I worked out my B12 intake and was shocked to find myself severely B12 deficient.

So there I was normal weight and reasonably active and creating all sorts of health problems for myself.

Within 3 months of revised diet, my tooth aches have 95% disappeared and as an added bonus tingles I was getting in my feet have stopped and the double vision I was getting when watching TV has gone.

Except this doesn’t take into account that some people (overweight or not) simply prefer the taste of diet/ sugar free drinks.

Personally I can’t drink regular coke*, it has a funny taste to me and I find it excessive sweet. But don’t mind a Coke Zero. Similarly a friend drinks Diet Coke based purely on a taste preference.

(*except when I am getting a migraine then I will have some - but it has a different taste then)

Wow, Johnk, that seems like an aweful lot of some manufactured product using some not very healthy chemicals. If you prefer a fizzy drink I'd go for plain mineral water. I sometimes drink that as well as plain water. It doesn't have a sweet taste though which may be your craving.
I love the sweet fizzy drinks without sugar. Mineral water doesn't do it for me. Soda water is ok and I sometimes mix that with beer to slow down beer consumption and I also use soda water as a mixer.

So what is too much Diet drinks? More than 1 diet drink? More than 2 diet drinks? A different number?

Change the question! How much is too much beer or too much wine? No one really knows.

And yes I see many obese people with a Big Mac and diet coke. It must be the diet coke that puts on the weight?

I’m intrigued as to how people see what drink people have at Maccas given they are served in non clear cups and even if they were, there is no difference in the appearance of the coke varieties...

There are often long lines and you can see which variety of drink is going into the cup.
And it is not just limited to Maccas.

As to how much soda - the Dietary Guidelines recommend them only occasionally and in small amounts. They’re not an everyday food but a sometimes one.

I'm now paranoid. Have started drinking soda water as well as Coke/Pepsi without sugar/calories.
Shouldn’t that be instead of? But maybe water is the thing, even the lightly sparkling style would be better.

I'm drinking mineral water in the VA lounge right now. I asked for soda water. Are they the same thing?

I won't stop drinking Coke/Pepsi without sugar/calories. I will drink less.

I can't drink water in the lounge. Not yet. Maybe when I'm older.

Mineral water is excellent. And different to Soda water. Well done.

I'm confused JohnK. I've read on several occasions that you don't drink (I presumed alcohol) yet here you talk about mixing min H2O with beer?

Ok so you have determined that you like a fizzy sweet taste. Willpower to limit your intake of these drinks may well help to improve your general health. Stick at it mate.

Re the Big Mac and diet Coke you may be right ;) .

I do drink when I'm on holidays in Thailand. I try to water down beer consumption with water/soda water and also when I mix my own spirits.

In Australia I try to not drink unless a special occasion. Not easy to do having access to free alcohol everywhere but I'm doing it comfortably.

Watch soda water as the sodium level can be high. Same with some mineral waters rather than just sparkling water.

There is research out there that says that diet soft drinks actually make affect weight loss/ weight gain so you’re better off in the long run making them occasional drinks - and you really savour them more when not an everyday thing.

Well yes, plain water is best, but going cold turkey can be hard to do. I find that min water is a palatable compromise.

Yes. I buy San Pell by the case and consume a fair amount of it at home. At work it is filtered chilled water.
