General Medical issues thread

When people really cant understand what I do I end up saying we are the detectives of medicine.
No surprise that physicians sometimes write detective novels.Starting with sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Likely a waste of time.
My GP believes the flu vaccine is only effective for 3-4 months and has advised to get it done now.

If there is no harm then paying $20 for an additional flu vaccine in say August may provide a further 3-4 months protection against the flu?

Oh dear, 12 months on from my fall, we are at the hospital because Erika tripped over a hose and as she protecting her new right knee when she fell, she landed on her left arm/wrist. Small fracture above the wrist. Backslab and fracture clinic next week.

Where she fell was pretty the same place as where I did.....................

Oh no, poor thing. Hope she is not in too much pain.

No like there.

Has anyone found nifedipine (atenolol) impossible to get? That’s the relief for raynaulds. Not expected into my pharmac_ until September :o

i was reading at the weekend that there are shortages in many directions. They are contemplating legislating to force drug companies to report shortages as soon as they become aware of the likelihood.
Critical drugs could be rationed following EpiPen shortage

Definitely dont take atenolol-that will worsen your Raynauds.
Try a different pharmac_.There are several pharmaceutical wholesalers and often they dont stock every drug and definitely not every brand.I am sure you will find a brand of nifepidine not neccessarily Adalat.

So how can that happen? Is this why we shouldn’t agree to generic drugs as they aren’t the same?

I'm generally the clumsy one (clumsy is my middle name!), Erika had been working in the garden all day and was very tired, I'm thinking that contributed to her tripping.

So I'm back to being chauffeur for a little while, she is off to Canada in early May, hopefully it'll be all sorted by then.

For my Greenland cruise I thought I might get some sea sickness med which I’ve never taken before. I’ll ask my GP, but just wondered what others take. I take no other meds.

I thought nifedipine was a different drug from atenolol with nifedipine sold as Adalat. Both prescribed for hypertension though.
Indeed Atenolol is not a brand of nifepidine but a B-blocker.And basically the least effective of those.
There have indeed been problems with generic drugs but the system is more robust today so generics should be bio equivalent.
However there are some reasonably ethical generic drug makers whilst the major pharmaceutical companies can be less than perfect at times.

I would be interested in this as well, for our Antarctica trip, as given Ms FM and Mr FM’s tendencies to motion sickness I know we will need it.

Some friends of ours did an Antarctica trip in Feb and had some terrible weather. Apparently they had patches given to them on the boat which worked fantastically, but they are not available in Australia. She wasn’t sure of the name.

Sue takes Avomine on recommendation from her Dr. One each night starting the day before cruising and there are no side effects for her.

I just watch the waves go by and have no side effects either.

Herbal - you can take ginger chewing gum or tablets. Some swear by the pressure bands on wrists. Sea bands I think they are called. Ships sometimes carry Bonine which is popular in the US. Just test anything before you leave to make sure it’s not the drowsy kind a Doctor might prescribe. I love it rough. MrP doesn’t. He was unwell on a rough ferry in Thailand. I just don’t get sea sick. On a Qld snorkeling trip when on QM2 most of the passengers got sick as did some highly experienced QM2 crew including Officers. Only A few of us didn’t get sea sick and were actually enjoying the roller coaster ride.

Sea sickness tablets need to contain meclizine. We can get them in the US at Ralph’s and Walgreens both of which are nearby. We don’t go cruising.

Ms FM says ginger works really well for her, but not sure that is going to be enough for Antarctica, so. I want to be prepared. Really don’t want anything that will make them drowsy - kind of defeats the purpose. Will be really funny (not), if I get sick and they don’t :).
