For those who have used ginger for motion sickness, which brand have you found that might have the active ingredient and not a whole lot of suspicious filler? Maybe I’ll just take some fresh ginger root and make a tea.

We took Blackmores. Funny story. On a Queensland trip to the reef (Not the previous one) the announcement came over that there are ginger tablets available for use if desired. We had some, but the announcement was only in English. Sure enough, most non Causasians were awfully ill. Seasickness is a funny thing. As soon as the motion has stopped you feel perfectly normal again because those same people puking then ate a very good lunch. Thankfully the return trip was fine, otherwise .........

I had a similar experience on a GC whale watching trip. A beautifully dressed Japanese family boarded. We weren’t offered anything for seasickness. I was Ok, but the family were awfully sick and spent the whole time splayed out on the decks in their lovely duds in a terrible state. But, as soon as we docked and stopped rocking, they sprang up and walked off as if nothing had happened.

I took meclazine during the day for my galapagos cruise and had a dramamine at night when we were told there would be some rocking and rolling. Felt great! Had the scopalamine patches too (no point being miserable on such an expensive trip) but never needed them.

Our trip was pretty ok. We had a nice swell the first night, to the point we were a lot slower going than predicted and then the last night, as we came around the top of Isabella and into less protected waters. They warned us it would be a rougher night but I slept through it easily.

Trick is to have the double hulled catamaran.

They tend to start the repositioning later at night once people have gone to bed.

Found out today that my 3 year old nephew has Chiari 1 or 2, which is a structural defect at the base of his skull and cerebellum. He is having bad headaches, has periods of non communication, is unbalanced and muscle weakness. His parents live remotely in WA, have a child that just started school and a newborn. He has been medi vacced to Perth for treatment. It’s all a little grim right now. I don’t know much more than that but my SIL and brother are deeply distressed. This was the family that came over to SA awaiting the birth of their child and we shared Christmas together. There are so many issues for them to deal with right now. :(

Terrible for them. Hope there will be positive results for him. Not surprising they are deeply distressed - such a worry and such a little tot. Also awful for you and the rest of the extended family.

Sorry to hear Pushka .

Thankyou both. As he’s already experiencing major symptoms I think that neurosurgery is their only option. He’s such a sweet little boy. Always smiling. Their dad took months off work in Nov-Jan due to the risk pregnancy and being in Adelaide. He has no leave left so must keep working. Parents are just 28 years old. I expect that Mum and the three kids will move to Perth for some time. I’m keeping everything crossed for great specialists. And we all feel so helpless right now.

Hurt my back coughing yesterday morning. I coughed twice, now I can barely move. Flying home from a trip to Kangaroo Island was a little challenging but waiting in the airport was the worst.

Sounds like I should cross off Galapagos from the bucket list:(
No, don't! I get very travel sick, and was absolutely fine. As long as you take your treatment before you get sick! Once you feel crook, it's too late. I just prophylactically dosed myself every day, and spent as much time up on deck as possible.

You can get the scopalamine patches from NZ which most people swear by. But some people get bad side effects from them, so try it out before you go. Mine didn't get here from NZ in time to try out, which is why I didn't use them but kept them as a backup.

And yes, double hull catamaran helped :)

My back will be glad when I’m finished laying laundry tiles. It’s catching a lot. Nurofen and hot compress sorts it each night. And sneezing for me is awkward.

Well you did insist on doing the tiling yourself. I was very impressed as it's an awful task.
Yeah. The quote for the full job was around $15,000. With cabinetry, plumbing and tiles it’s come in at around $3,400.

There is one kind of back pain I get from some kind of chairs. Flat wooden ones are awful. Two hours on a bench seat and I’m in trouble for days. Then there is the pain I get from activities like vacuuming and gardening. Hence I only use a stick vacuum that goes flat before I do too much damage. The activity I’m currently doing gives me problems that night but next day I’m fine. Anyways, laundry almost done. Plumber tomorrow. Grouting floor tiles Tuesday and some painting. I quite like grouting. Hides a lot of evils. Cabinets Thursday and then final fix Friday. I will gave some wall tiles to do around sink area but no cutting involved and I’m upright so it’s a snap.

Any of the anticholinergics make me very drowsy and feeling very odd. Have tried all of the above plus more, and in various combinations.

Once I had Scop patches in NZ.
Pre applied about 3 hours prior to Cook Strait crossing
Was a sunny day at Picton.
Embarked
Feeling Good
Mrs QS said - "see its smooth"
I said - "but its still in port"

I was told it was a sunny day in Picton and Wellington. The captain announced various things and also said they expected a smooth voyage.
So Ok went to have an early lunch on board

smooth sailing out of the port
Then bam! - hit weather and massive swell.:mad::mad:
Did not let up until we got to Wellington.
Captain closed all outside decks which meant I was trapped inside. The toilets had queues. Lots of people chucking up, lying on the floor etc etc. All looking very green, but Mrs QS kept getting snacks and drinks......

On another boat trip at the Southern tip of Tasmania to see the wildlife off the coast, I learnt in a small boat to always chuck from the rear but always downwind......

Im Ok on the Ferris Wheel and dodgem cars. Even the simulator rides where you "fly" through a video makes me want to chuck.

Oh dear, sounds like rough water is not your thing. I love movement on a ship!

The Cook Strait can be a mean beast! I still have vivid memories of a trip as a child (we did the crossing about 4 times a year) where the swell was horrendous - the ferry was pitching massively and there were people sick everywhere.

Also add to the list the Rear of any form of transportation except for trains.

The rear of airplanes move about the axis of travel a lot more than the front The most stable part would be wings and forward. The problem is that those seats are pricey.

I actually thought the ship was going to sink. It could be triple hulled, and I would not have cared.
Mrs QS teased me something horrendous the entire journey.

Im surprised it is still in business and never sunk since the Wahine in the 1960s. Though it came close to capsizing in 2006 where the Ferry heeled to 50 deg (as in a sustained roll). Our crossing was in 2001

Oh dear. That does sound quite severe! The meclazine didn't make me sleepy, everything else knocks me out for 4+ hours.

Luckily there are land based excursions on the Galapagos you can do instead!
