General Medical issues thread

Portion sizes are fine by what definition? That’s one area that’s easy to cut back. And you still drink soft drink? I’ve found that as soon as I start eating more, then I need to eat more so that’s a sign for me to reduce again. It takes a couple of days to settle back.
The portion sizes are the same as they were when I was dieting successfully before my daughter was born.

- 7 slices bread ~35g-40g with ~20g-30g avocado
- Sliced boiled potato or thinly sliced sushi approx ~150 calories
- ~150g lettuce with ~60g shredded chicken or tuna
- apple
- pear
- mandarin/orange

The above should be ~800 calories perhaps a little more.

At night I will have ~300g-400g lamb/pork/beef fried with very little vegetable oil. I like to let the meat fry in its own fat. Also some boiled broccoli, cauliflower.

The only soft drink I have is diet soft drink and that should not have any calories. My lunch can consist of up to 20 portions so eating regularly.

All of the above is ~1600-1800 calories and from experience I need to consume less than 1600 calories to lose weight.

There are around 560 calories just in all that bread and will be quickly ‘consumed’ leaving you hungry again. I eat maybe four slices of bread a week!

@JohnK . Maybe less of the bread

Snap.

Lamb is full of fat. The fat needs to drain away.

Generally thats because people think the diet reduces total calorie intake which is true, except they replace it with other calorie sources. @JohnK is at least counting his calories.

Im drinking less diet soft drink but I like the fiziness so I drink fizzy water
There is some suggestion that your body reacts to the artificial sweetener in the same way as real sugar though.

The bread was a recommendation from the dietician as I wasn't having enough carbs and I like having some bread anyway.

40g of bread is only 124 calories.

Fats are necessary in a diet.

There’s better ways of getting carbs. I’m surprised a dietician would say 7 slices a day is appropriate. I like bread too. But it’s carb heavy for value. Fats are necessary - of course yes. But you’d probably get enough from eggs and dairy.
Healthy Ways to Include Bread in Your Diet

1 slice is 23 grams average. 7 slices is way more than 124 calories.

I think you're misunderstanding my definition of slice.

A bread roll similar to the Qantas bread rolls is ~45-50g. They are tiny. I slice 7 small slices from that roll and those 7 small slices weigh ~35-40g and are no more than 124 calories as 100g of bread is 210 calories so not quite a small bread roll per day.

Also please remember that I weigh my food to ensure I keep to the portion sizes needed to lose weight. That's pretty good discipline. No?

The photo doesn't do the food justice but it's actually quite tasty.

I know that if you google artificial sweeteners you come up with the fact that they cause weight gain/And there is a correlation between diet soft drinks and weight gain.however first with experiments with hamsters there was no weight gain when fed diet yoghurt with various sweeteners and no hormonal changes.Weight gain and change in insulin levels with yoghurt sweetened with sugar.
So repeated in humans.once again the same findings when yoghurt was the medium carrying the sweetener.Have quoted the article before in the this thread though cant find it just now.
It's the old story-association doesn't mean causation.

Actually those look very tasty. :)

Two things @JohnK - they are right about the CPAP - if you are significantly overweight and especially if you prefer to sleep on your back, you will likely be suffering sleep apnoea. And it causes you to secrete cortisol, a stress hormone which will try its best to defeat any attempt you make to lose weight by changing your body chemistry to encourage it to lay down fat. And sleep apnoea will also make you cranky and miserable in other ways.
CPAP does not go with OCD and anxiety attacks. I cannot wear a mask to sleep. Just like I cannot wear a mouthguard to sleep to keep my mouth open. They are both claustrophobic and my subconscious will fight to the point where anxiety will be out of control so I need to find a solution to these issues that is the least stressful.

Losing weight is difficult. Forget exercise. I'm not even going to try regular exercise. If I exercised in the morning I'd be too tired to get through the rest of the day and by the time I come home I'm dead tired and exercise is the last thing I need. I play golf. That is my exercise.

So back to dieting and failing. Feeling hungry is good. Starving is good. Just can't quite convince my mind at the moment.

Ah, ok, maybe just say you eat a small bread roll then ;). Coz that isn’t a slice. :D

Then perhaps you need to explore something like hypnotherapy to help you wear a CPAP mask - noting you can get nasal pillows only and not full face ones.

Not addressing the sleep issue may eventually kill you, especially given your history of heart attacks. I am sure your daughter will appreciate you doing everything you can to ensure you're around as long as possible for her.

And that is a lot of carbs in a day - especially white bread, rice and potato. You need to be choosing low GI like soy linseed bread and then filling up on protein and good fats, and cutting back on the fruit. Eggs for breakfast, or yoghurt, salad and protein for lunch and protein and green vegetables for dinner. Good fat like avocado. Snacks like almonds, carrots, hummus, celery. Fruits - stick to berries.

Worse case - do a stint on something like Optifast.
