Left - not my preferred hand :)

No, don't think so. Consensus was a spider bite, probably when I was gardening the day before. Gloves next time.
Oh. My younger son will kill me but he doesn’t read these forums. 18 years ago. The day before Christmas and a flight to Noosa he went for a swim in our pool. Bathers normally left on a pool fence to dry. He experienced ‘discomfort’ when we arrived in Noosa 24 hours later that escalated to the extent I took him to Noosa outpatients. He had major swelling in his groin and I could see the ‘line’ of infection going down his leg. He was - 10? They were going to discharge then someone said they thought we should stay. He was admitted for exploratory surgery. So, On the day after Christmas they called in the Noosa Surgeon who was on holidays and was ploughing his field. Called in the emergency staff for surgery. Noosa Hospital has not officially been opened yet. Brand spanking new. They were thinking torsion of testicl_. We had to ask our 10 year old as to whether he wanted a prosthesis! He went into surgery and it turned out it was major inflammation and infection presumed from a spider bite in his boardies hanging on the pool fence. Thank goodness no torsion. This was 1999-2000 New Years Eve millennial celebration trip.

Well here I am, gowned up waiting to go up to theatre to have an infected hand ( tendon area) flushed out.

Decided to re- present at Hobart Private hospital this morning after hand started swelling and throbbing a bit.

I came prepared with book and laptop, so the day hasn't been wasted! :)

Getting your moneys worth at least!

Hope all goes well and you’re feeling better quickly.

I had a spider either crawl up my jeans leg while driving (or was there when I put them on) in QLD about 10 years ago. I felt the bite as I was driving a rental car back to the airport to catch a flight. I had to pull over, hide behind the car and drop my pants!

Was not feeling 100% at check in and Virgin first aid provided ice packs and had to clear me to fly back to Sydney. Was painful and inflamed for a few days.

Never saw the culprit.

All the best RooFlyer.
As if on cue the radio news had an item about snake bites in Tassie-6 presentations to ED these holidays already.
Though didn't see any this weekend with visits to 2 National Parks.

Got back to room with a well anesthetized, totally bound up hand and a drip into the other arm,( maybe a drip at both ends of the canula? boom tish ! )

You know you getting old when the doctors look young!

Very much economy class evening meal of sandwiches and juice.

Lovely staff.

Spent the evening reading a fair chunk of 'The Fabrication of Aboriginal History' by Windshuttle. Now typing one handed as I try to get ultra tired and maybe get to sleep. My first night in hospital (well, since I was born :)) and I don't like it much. Quite noisy and of course regular checks on me.

But better than being at home, would probably be in a bad situation now.

If you step onto a university campus admitting what you've been reading without trigger-warning the snowflakes so they can rush to the safe-space and wet themselves in the appropriate toilet, the spider-bite may end up seeming mighty trivial... ;):D.

Whatever it was, it sounds like a pretty nasty reaction. Hope that the hospital treatment fixes it now. Take care.

I'm doing a bit of Windshuttling myself at the moment. So far everyone's been fine with it ( it's almost non debatable).

Maybe some photos would assist us in determining the affect of the injuries on your handsome face?

Good on your colleague for insisting you got properly checked out. Can I assume sobriety was not achieved until many, many hours later?

While a visit to the ED is a bit of a PITA at any time, I'm glad you went and had suffered no major injuries. Unexplained fainting though is a bit of a concern.

Penegal try holding the side rail at all times going both ways on stairs. I am sure everyone is pleased that you are ok. Stairs are generally a pretty hard landing spot especially for head and shoulders.

Private or public hospital? I did my first ever visit to an ED (see above post) and I couldn't be bothered with any delay in the public system, so i went Private. "No waiting, no delay ..." It cost $180, but I get a return visit within 14 days at no extra cost :)

Thank you all - let me work out how to crop and post a pic.

The bruises have come down quite a bit in recent days.

Went to Royal Melbourne, which was the closest public ED to the location of the incident.

No private insurance rf.. tut tut…
If you can afford to flit around the planet, you can afford to warrant your health care… … .. …. imnsho :)

I have private health insurance, ( big time) but the Private Hosp. Emerg fee isn't refundable is what I meant. I guess they don't want people flitting in there easily ( and I agree). The place was deserted!

Most (all ?) private hospitals charge a fee for attending ED, especially if you aren't admitted.

And it’s quite a hit!

Possible reason being because of our cooler weather, the snakes sit in the open more, to warm up ( a bit like the humans :))

As you know ( but for QF WP's info) all three types of snakes in Tas are venomous.

I know, that was part of my research yesterday via Google. Of the 3 main venomous spider, funnel web and redback bites shouldn't have you presenting with those symptoms. How about a jumping spider? In this bite (looks like the side of body) it spread over 3-4 days.

My wife wants to come back to Tassie. The beaches look lovely but the spiders adn snakes might put her off...
