General Medical issues thread

Dad has fallen again. Multiple small fractures of the pelvis. They'll keep him in hospital at least 1-2 weeks.

He'd only just recovered from previous lengthy stint in hospital.

Sorry to hear about this.
Have investigations been done as to what is causing his falls.
I assume he's not that old and infirm, unless he is.......
As you are 55 is he in 75 -80 yo range.

Dad will be 81 end of April. @drron may say that I think I know I everything but I would say Lyrica (as well as Targin) is causing the falls. He's been up and about a couple of months and has fallen quite a few times.

Luckily didn't break hip which may have been a terrible outcome.

This time I think you are right JohnK.The more drugs someone is on the more likely is a fall.Lyrica and targin are amongst the worst. If he is also on blood pressure lowering medication it is that much more likely.

Sorry JohnK but sometimes it is not the doctor who doesn't know everything.
@drron I don't claim to know everything but I do know some things about my condition.

As you know I'm on immune suppressants. It takes longer for my body to get over infections. If I've got an inflamed throat it is very uncomfortable to the point where I may struggle breathing. If antibiotics helps this condition improve then surely that is what I should do?

Yes I know there's a difference between viral and bacterial infections and unless one gets tested there's no way of knowing whether one has viral or bacterial infections.

So a doctor telling me my infection is more than likely viral and tells me to wait it out isnt helping me. If I then choose to take antibiotics and there's an improvement in 2-3 days then I need to assume the antibiotics have helped and that is what is likely I will do next time around. My ex-GP of 20 years told me to self medicate as soon as infection looked/felt bad enough. Maybe not great advice but he knew me better than most doctors.

So what happens if that superbug hits? Pray that it misses me or there's a last line of defence which is still available to assist.

P.S. Daughter still coughing badly but her cough not same as mine. It's been 3 weeks for her. I think doctor should have given her small dose of antibiotics last week.

My recent viral infection took 6 weeks to go. Yes, frustrating, but it cleared itself in the end.
You probably had the same thing I did. I caught it from my English niece while visiting for Xmas. Took weeks to get over, and just when I was about to break out the antibiotics, someone talked me into waiting another day and it started improving after that. I really turned the corner when I got home where it was warm though.

I came back from our o/s trip with a little bit of belly problems and a nasty flu as a present from my wife's English cousin - the belly is now ok and the flu is going.

However, I have also just had a ultrasound to confirm that I have got another visit from my old friend the Kidney Stone, so far non-obstructive. I have sent the referral off to the urologist and am waiting an appointment. About 6 x 8 mm for those interested. There is no pain or other symptoms at the moment

The previous one that I couldn't pass and required an ureteroscopy was about 10 - 12mm - if I recall correctly.

I had a persistent cough for weeks that has finally gone but has left me with ongoing headaches.

Wish me luck as I head off for an MRI/MRA tomorrow morning. The thought of the claustrophobic machine is what's really causing me concerns. I'll have to be doped up and driven there. Fortunately the hospital is only 5 min away.

Good luck - hope it all goes well.

It's been going around - sounds like what I have/had. It's a long lingering one too and tends to be viral so not much you can do to it. 6 weeks seems to be the common timeframe for it......

Actually it has not been too bad so far. The aches & pains have pretty much gone after a week. The tiredness is improving. It is mainly the chesty cough bringing up a bit of phlegm that is the annoyance. I have still been able to ride my pushbike, if even slower than normal, for 5 out of 7 days. My wife has been worse off than me as she had a day or two mostly in bed.

Yep, that's the bit I had for 6+ weeks. A right royal pain!

All the best. That's one test I'll try to avoid as much as possible. I had taken 2 Valiums and still having panic attacks.

Good luck with that straitman. Trying to stay in good shape as we age takes a lot more time once we go past 60 it seems.

Back up to 124-125kgs after New Years.

Now back down to 117-118kgs and have only really been back on my diet the past 3 weeks. The same diet I had 3 years ago before daughter was born with slight variation. Counting calories and make sure sure less than 2,000 calories a day Monday-Thursday and not counting calories the other 3 days but try not to overdo it. Most days under 1,500 calories and 2 days were under 1,000 calories.

Hard work but this variation seems to have tricked the body. Keep going for another 6 weeks before going back to Thailand.
