General Medical issues thread

I reckon it is a 6 week viral cough! I’m at just around 4 weeks now and it is not wanting to budge.

Good news on the MRI straitman. I find them strangely relaxing and nearly fall asleep during them!

Back up to 124-125kgs after New Years.

Now back down to 117-118kgs and have only really been back on my diet the past 3 weeks. The same diet I had 3 years ago before daughter was born with slight variation. Counting calories and make sure sure less than 2,000 calories a day Monday-Thursday and not counting calories the other 3 days but try not to overdo it. Most days under 1,500 calories and 2 days were under 1,000 calories.

Hard work but this variation seems to have tricked the body. Keep going for another 6 weeks before going back to Thailand.

Ohhhh, JohnK I hadn't realised the extent of your problem. I thought you may have been around 95-100kg. However it is a step in the right direction to have lost 7 or 8kg in a few weeks. If you continue to lose until you return to Thailand it will be a great achievement. Then there is the problem of keeping the weight off while on holiday. .Chok dee krap.:)

Had to translate that. :p:)

I've been battling weight issues since I gave up smoking 16 years ago. I've been as high as 128-130kgs. Don't want to be back there again.

You also need some luck and in that area it feels like "chok mai mee".

Taking my husband to the doctors today because Im sick of hearing him Dr Google himself into early death. Or diabetes or a blood disorder or leukemia. According to Dr Google, hes got it all.

Hmmm.... I know for a fact that 2yrs ago when hubby got blood test results the Doctor did not say, "You are diabetic"

Todays doctor said looking at 2yr old results, he was/is.

New test tomorrow - and hubby is down to 91kgs, he was about 110kgs 2yrs ago so fingers crossed. (he runs 8klms x 3 and swims 2kms x 3 per week plus his hiking, diving ect).

Now my gemini hubby is spiraling emotionally.

Unless he did multiple tests last time I wouldn't have thought one test result was enough for a diagnosis.

I said to the Dr lets just start fresh and tomorrow is a new blood & urine test.

Hubby went on a rant about his dad being diabetic killed him and it contributed to his alzhiemers

Me to Doctor: His father was 94 years old. His heart just slowed down and the dementia was only in the last 4 of those years.

Doctor trying to explain to hubby that he can be healthy (run, swim ect) but still have a condition that requires medication - hubby not accepting it very well at all. Its going to be a miserable night.

Body fat is the diabetics bete noir, so if he is hard enough in his mind , aim for minimal body fat.. asap or sooner.

I am a fringe dweller , the diabetes you have when you are not having diabetes….
Getting rid of the flab and keeping it off has kept me on the fringe for many years.

He takes requiring meds as such a persona insult. Like why is my body letting me down. He just wants to enjoy retirement, work out, have fun and be left alone - apparently having to take a pill or two a day ruins that and its not how he wants to live.

The Dr was good - trying to get him to hear that lots of active people manage conditions with meds.

Meanwhile I want to remind him of his vitamin addiction and how he took about 44 tablets in 24hrs last year that didnt end well.

Maybe he needs less google time.;)
Dropping from 110kg to 91 must be a step in the right direction so long as there is no underlying cause other than his exercise and better nutrition.

........

I agree with hubby, as silly as it sounds, my take is that having to take any medicine is a personal failing. Although it doesn't stop me from following my doctor's instructions, it just gives me another reason to mentally self flagellate myself. Drives the boss spare! :)

Meanwhile I best loose the flab!

totally understand where he is coming from, as I am pretty similar. However we are living longer, so it is inevitable that things are going to go wrong. 50 years ago people used to retire and die a few years later, now we can look forward to many years of active retirement.

I know a number of people who are diabetics - including the husband of a lady who used to work for me. He was in his 30s, thin and fit and it was picked up in a work health check. Type 1, but just didn’t happen until he was an adult. He controls it beautifully with diet and medication.

I think it is OK to pick and choose a bit what you take, as long as you understand the risks. However there is a place for medication and diabetes is probably one of them. It’s not a death sentence - if he really attacks diet and exercise and manages the condition with meds then he’s got many years ahead of him of happy and healthy retirement.

We are lucky to know so much about diabetes and how to control it. I can understand it would be a shock though and he just needs time to process the news. Nothing wrong with googling, so he understands what is happening, as long as he isn’t going to crank sites that promise snake oli cures.

This is a High moral ground observation.. othersmmv , but if he is "just" diabetic.. avoid the pills if possible.
Doctors diagnose diseases in absolute terms... the minimalist and the nearly dead with the same label.. it's quite annoying.
It's a very slow disease in terms of progression and side effect.
Heaps of people are diabetic and do not know..
Unless he is post prandial peaking high very in the teens no need to panic , time is your friend.
I repeat , a do it or die flab campaign, super tight diet and regular testing to understand what foods affect the individual patient "may" be all he needs.
OTOH… he may already be very high and the pills will certainly cut off the peaks quickly and even up his Glycated readings.
It's hard to stop taking pills once started because folks adjust their diet to the level of control offered by the pills.
I suspect that some insulin dependent diabetics could have avoided the dependency with just draconian diet and exercise….

Just in case.....Its not a big scam by Big Pharma either...

Tgh it is not as simple as you think.diabetes does not affect everyone the same. Some people who are thin and active still can develope type 2 diabetes.
A spectacular example was a fellow i looked after for ~ 10 years.A history of diabetes for 25 years.I never saw a blood glucose less than 20mmol/L.He was on insulin but missed at least 50% of his doses.A very abnormal GTT but his HBa1C was never above 5.7.he still when i retired did not have 1 complication of diabetes. That was now 35 years after diagnosis.
He only came to see me by accident.his Atrial fibrillation played up whilst visiting the sunshine Coast.he lived in Townsville.he also drank at least 2 bottles of whisky a day and yes he was also on warfarin.always took the same dose of warfarin and had his INR checked 2-3 times a year only.Always was between 2.4 and 2.8.I was the first doctor to tell him there was no need to give up the grog so he continued to fly down 3 times a year for a check.

Now there is me.I have a family history of diabetes because I have haemochromatosis.Diabetes is one of the complications of this.About 6 years ago I developed a peripheral neuropathy.Sugars all normal,GTT normal,HBa1C 5.5.No other cause of neuropathy found but my nerve conduction studies suggested a pattern typical of diabetes. Now I am overweight but keep up quite reasonable exercise levels.
In the last 6 months my sugar levels just a little on the high side.HBa1C still 5.6.But despite your advice in consultation with my GP I have started Metformin. It has one good side effect-i have lost 2 Kg despite being on a cruise.
