General Medical issues thread

Yes the peaks are captured in the HbA1c. We are not looking for the average but the quality of the glucose control if you will.
Sensible diabetic management take all that into acocunt.
Tight blood glucose control is difficult and only the most determined patient will succeed. How determined should one be?. Difficult to say - there are downsides to tight control such as hypoglycaemia.

And AFF reminded me to get my iron levels checked so while visiting the doctor today regarding my arm I asked for a pathology request on my iron levels.

Results in 2 weeks.

Campbell de Morgan spots or senile angiomas. Have quite a few. Many are very small but some are noticeable. Not much is known about these angiomas but one of the causes is cyclosporine which I was on for many years.

Some medicines can cause quite a bit of damage.

At least they are harmless. And common with aging.

I saw my specialist the other day who was astounded by the dramatic turnaround in my blood test results over the last three months, when she had previously read me the riot act.

The three month blood sugar test went from 12.5 (totally out of control) to 6.7(pretty good), cholesterol got lower to 3.6. Liver function was fine at last.

And all I've really done is switch from using big slices of toasting bread (mainly Tip Top's The One) to the less tasty, smaller, cheap Homebrand sandwich bread sold in supermarkets for $1.25 a loaf. And I also switched from using margarine to spreadable butter.

I keep wondering if maybe they didn't accidentally switch my results with someone else's.
Regards,
Renato

is the 3.6 total cholesterol or LDL, or non HDL?

You are saying that your blood tests results, though welcome, are unexpected. In situations like this the only way to be sure is to do another test. Because the tests results are not necessarily going to change the management in the short term, it may be entirely acceptable to repeat in about 8 weeks - speak with Dr.

Thanks, will be having another slightly different blood test soon, but which covers some of those parameters.

Renato

Don't know - she just says she was delighted.
For most of my adult life, my cholestrol has been between 5.2 to 5.4, having more of the bad one than the good one - whichever it is.
Cheers,
Renato
well that sounds fantastic if it is total cholesterol - I am deeply envious :)

Thanks - so is my wife, especially over my butter eating habits. She is eating all the cholestrol lowering margarines, and her cholesterol is going up. I did test them years ago and thought they tasted terrible, but the current ones taste much better.

Renato

You just have to have the right genes. My fasting cholesterol is between 2.7 and 3.6.HDL>50%.
Shocked once when my non fasting total cholesterol got to 4.7.

You should see the cholesterol busting margarines as its made - especially what they do to turn it yellow, and what the colour is before its yellow. In short the whole thing is an unnatural chemistry experiment.

Well the same could be said for any drug really.

Ah from what we have found out, the test results may not be loaded to your Health Record (if you have one). This is because the database used is different from what the pathologists and doctors use and are not compatible. MrLtL had a long discussion with the practice nurse on this very topic and was advised that nada would be loaded. (which is one of the reasons he wanted the Health Record as he has to arrange to get the reports and results individually each time...PITA).

Well what a complete waste of time then. What is the point!
