General Medical issues thread

Mr FM has had a yearly consult with a skin specialist and I have lost track of how many have been cut out, burnt off, frozen off and creamed off. Fair skin and growing up in Queensland plus a genetic predisposition - his father died at 78 from a skin cancer that metastasised

Its interesting and I''m not sure reassuring. I''m blonde, blue eyed, English skin. As a kid I never sun baked as when I got accidentally burnt I just got red, splotchy. Used to admire all the gorgeous tans. As a teen I travelled with my parents to Perth where by the pool I"d see these two gorgeous teens get beautifully tanned. Sunning every day. The last day we left, one of them had clearly gone too far and her face was a mess of patches where shed started peeling. Pale pink blotches and tan patches.

I have been to a dermatologist as my English skin Dad was in the Navy during Korean War and on one of those aircraft carriers where all they wore were those stupid caps. By the time hed died his face was a patchwork and he lost an ear through squamous cancers. One growth was removed from my ankle and one from my face with GP and specialist (plastic surgeon) stating that in advance to be prepared for more surgeries. Biopsy came back negative for cancer. Next visit a different doctor and she examined my back and said she could tell from the pattern of my skin that there was no evidence that I would develop skin cancer. Surprised me that she could tell that.

While I know that a set up in the local shopping centre is not reliable, I thought as I had 5 mins spare I'd get a free check of BP, blood sugar and cholesterol. Only prob was that it could have been fasting, except I had just had a marshmallow at the cafe and a mint at the bank. :p Still I passed all as "healthy". Looks like I can eat my quarterly steak at the soon Kingo AFF get togther.

Mrs FB said that the last blood test she had for cholesterol, fasting was no longer a requirement. I wonder if it's changed in how they can assess it?

I was required to fast for cholesterol test prior to recent heart procedure.

The shopping centre ‘report’, had 2 figures for the range, one for fasting and the other for non fasting. When I go for my blood tests normally they ask me if I have I been fasting or not and they seem to make a note of it.

Don’t GPs report this anyway? Or is this for people who don’t go to the doctor?

I would strongly encourage people to join Flutracking especially with the current corona virus outbreak

Once you've registered it takes less than a minute each week.

Depends which type of cholesterol they are looking at. Triglycerides, definitely need to fast. LDL and HDL, not so important.

Yes, I've been doing it for the past few years. Good to think I am 'helping'

One of MrsRK's friends told her she had seen a fortune teller who informed her that having a phone number with either 08 or 80 in it is a sure indicator one will get cancer.
Of course I don't believe such mumbo jumbo, but...……………..

my phone number has both 08 and 80 in it, so I was doomed ever since I got this number.

With all this cold and flu talk I got to thinking today about when I last had a cold. I reckon that it is over 10 years. Haven't had flu either, nor any flu injections.

I virtually never get sick - of any kind. Colds are about 1 a year. Never had the flu. But I’ve been sick 3 times since Xmas - one viral infection and 2 colds :(

It’s interesting having a cough at the moment. I’ve copped some sideways looks from people when I’ve coughed.

Except - All of South Australia has 08.🤭 Guess we’d better expect a landslide of cancers. I think it’s a myth maybe? ;) And 8 is lucky in Chinese culture anyway.

Another one who has never had the flu ( at 60), but plenty of colds. I wonder if there has ever been a study of people in that situation?

Me either. Bad colds but not genuine flu. MrP has had it a couple of times. Completely bed ridden. Fainted when he tried to get up. And yet he didn’t give it to me even though I didn’t move out of the bedroom as I’d nowhere else to sleep! My immune system is supercharged which was fine until it started turning in on me!

I am not sure whether I have had flu or not. Never been diagnosed with it, but then I wouldn’t go to the doctor for anything unless I was really ill, so clearly I have never been that ill even if I did have the flu. I do once every two or three years get a cold, some worse than others.

we got the flu vaccination for the first time 2 years ago - it was free, why not :). But we didn’t really feel we needed it.

Mr FM always has the flu - I got a bit snappy with him last year and told him that he didn’t - a bit of a snuffle and a cough is not the flu. He said his Mum always called it the flu :)
