General Medical issues thread

The fall monitor sounds good, we are both acoustically challenged and stuff happens.
I went base over apex coming in the back door in in the dark with wet thongs and an armful of cat .
I lay on the floor for a bit laughing at my ineptitude and the offended stupid human look on the cats face…
swmbo had not a clue, I could have died there and then….
Lose the thongs ...

Only tenuously connected with recent posts re Fitbit etc ...

I have afib issues ... three episodes of flutter between 3 and 1.5 years ago. On-going occasional ectopic 'swarms' (atrial and ventrical) controlled by beta blockers.

My Fitbit used to give very erratic readings when I was having a lot of ectopics so I gave it away, as it was giving me frights when I was out.

I invested in a Kardia and more recently a Kardia 6L, which gives a 6 channel ECG on your phone :). After analysis, it gives a US FDA approved 'opinion' of 'Normal' or otherwise. Good enough I can e-mail to my cardiologist for an opinion if I'm worried, or before a regular check-up.

Edit: For a 6 channel, you put the back of the unit on a knee and finger tips on the 2 pads on the top. Watch it live on your phone.

Just a time slice - you can record as long as you like.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my query about wrist heart monitors. Sounds like Fitbit is definitely out. I am looking into the Xiaomi and Garmin options. I'm grateful to Flashback for those suggestions.

A fall monitor also sounds like a good idea. I did have a fall a year or so ago when I dropped a tablet on the floor and was trying to stop the dog from eating it. I banged my head into the door frame and it bled like crazy as I was on two different blood thinners at the time. Fortunately there were two family members at home when it happened. I had it treated in Emergency.

Head injuries can ellicit alot of blood. I have never fainted in my life. About seven, eight years ago I dropped in to see my doc about an infection that had started in my fingernail but had begun to travel into my wrist. Waiting patiently for the person ahead to finish at reception I suddenly felt the left side of my body simply collapse under me, I lurched to the left and traveled 2-3m behind the reception desk diving headlong into the steel filling cabinets splitting my eyebrow in the process. Blood was immediate and as I regained consciousness the receptionist was admonishing me for bleeding all over the carpet. I was only unconscious momentarily. Needless to say I got in to see the doc immediately and had the wound stitched. News got around to all the other off-roster reception staff and to this day I cannot walk into the surgery without some comment or giggles.

Looking back with my most recent long list of heart issues it puts it in perspective as likely a momentary heart stoppage.

Well hugs and sad wasn't the reaction I expected. :) I related the story more as a bit of black humour on the evolving topic of head wounds. It does have a funny side.

The trouble is that we can't do two smileys when the mood changes throughout the post. Here's a 😂 for the last bit.

Well, here is the first time I've dropped in on this thread... and moreso just to share.

I'm 33, get blood tests annually as the family GP likes to keep an eye on whatever he is testing for, due to my Dad's history of heart disease and my brother's previous heart issues. Had some done in Jan, and since I hadn't heard anything assumed all was well. Yesterday I received a call from the doctors office saying he'd like to see me regarding my recent blood test results.

Naturally, anxiety went through the roof assuming I'm dying. Co-worker talked me back from the ledge assuring me if it was something serious the doctor would have called me himself (true, he is like that). So, now we wait until Friday. I am hoping he just wants to see me to say how amazing my results are after losing 22kgs, and praise me for my health (HA.....), Dad suggested I probably just have high cholesterol. That's what I get for trying to get healthy.

Pass the wine ;)

My GP surgery asks me to call in even when everything is fine and under control. Fingers crossed the same for you. I’d have expected an earlier call if it was dire as I believe the labs flag it differently.

My gp doesn't usually call with results , but offered to do so this week.
I wondered about the change of service levels and eventually realised on the way home that they will probably bulk bill me for a phone consult if he rings.

That always annoys me, paying $75 for the joy of being told everything is fine....

I am bulk billed but it would annoy me just because of the inconvenience. My doctor runs on "if there's an issue I'll ring you" so I've never bothered to book follow-up appts after tests...

MIne doesn't ring with results, (previous one did!) and I have to argue with reception to get him to call and then they demand payment upfront!
Oh, I used to argue with reception on getting the DR to call me - it used to be, I could ring and ask for a script and he'd just do one up - no need for an appt. Then I got the 'new girl' who advised I'd need an appt. So I started ringing and just saying "I'd like to leave a message for the DR to call me". He's never charged me though for a phone call - that's just rude!

Ours charges $15 for a repeat script from a phone call.

MrlLtL needed a new referral. A repeat. Telephone consult - 2 minutes exactly - received a bill for $95,
He should get one of those never ending referrals for chronic issues.

@Pushka there is a sign in our DRs office indicating they charge for scripts outside of consults, but I've never actually been charged. Maybe the old bugger has a soft spot for me.

I had some liver function tests done as part of an overall investigation last year. Apparently they were elevated and I was meant to get re-tested in 6 weeks. I never did and got a letter 3 months later saying I needed to make an appointment re: blood test results. Everything was fine by then, hopefully it’s nothing 🤞
