General Medical issues thread

I do not have runny nose, but when lying in bed my breathing is a bit laboured and is "noisy".
Bronchitis? Several forms, bacterial and viral & typically lasts a few weeks. Usually lots of coughing though.

I think I have it now. Only symptom is lots of coughing and some crackling/ gurgling in lungs on deep exhale. -ve RAT.

Good luck getting into a GP in the next two weeks and with respiratory issues. Even Telehealth is banked up.
Seeing my GP tomorrow ( a week wait). Mainly to see if I can get an industrial strength cough suppressant for upcoming long plane trips 😳

@prozac it is probably a good idea to get a chest xray done. It might be a bacterial infection which has progressed to pneumonia.
The other thing is to rule out heart failure with your previous history. Heart failure classically causes more shortness of breath when you lie down. Often there will be swollen ankles but some don't get this. Nausea and changing taste can be due to fluid accumulating in the liver.

Sounds like me 'cept I don't need to deep exhale or inhale to get the sounds.. Got worried tonight when my taste went haywire.

Get one of the TGA approved dual rat (see link upthread) from pharmacists.
Search shows Hornsby and NBH each have drive-through clinics.

Had the pneumonia thought a couple of nights ago. When I say I've had it around 17 days (I was wrong it is around 11 days) is when first strange signs commenced. Went for a walk on Good Friday and before I was out of the driveway my heart was thumping (HR-117). We did around 3,000 steps but every step was an effort. Did same walk on easter Sunday and was much easier. Coughing, shortness of breath etc started last Monday.
So around 11 days...feels much longer as I've been confined to barracks.

And @drron , thank you for advice.

Interesting situation not sure related.

Friday daughter starts vomiting around 5:00pm. Vomited around 10-12 times for next 5 hours mostly water. Could not keep anything down. Not fever no cough. Got some medicine and that seemed to do trick.

Saturday morning starts to cough while she was asleep and fever. No coughing during day. She's improving now. Originally I though 24 hour virus but the cough and fever threw me out.

Last night, Sunday, around around 9:30pm I'm not feeling well so I go to bed. Wake up 1:00am feeling awful. Burping. Lots of awful smells from stomach. Feels like I was not digesting anything. At this time diarrhoea started. This went on for next 9 hours and went to toilet 11 times. I didn't think it was possible to go this many times. Felt like vomiting a few times but controlled it as it's an awful feeling. Hallucinating and dreams were jumbled and all over the place. Could not start drinking fluids until around 6:00am. No fever. No cough. But was sweating at times.

Now at SIN airport and still not 100% percent. Didn't have anything to eat until 4:00pm and have eaten a small amount since.

Very strange. Have I picked it up from daughter or is mine different? Wife is fine.

Certainly possible @JohnK . Was 46 years ago on a holiday to QLD. Mrsdrron got an acute attack of vomiting in Cairns. 4 days later on the Sunshine Coast I got diarrhoea and another 4 days later in Brisbane our son got D&V.

Very strange @drron. And now more than 24 hours later and 2 flights there are no further issues and feel 100%. No nausea, no diarrhoea. So my whole episode lasted roughly 12 hours.

My daughter still has cough but no fever.

And now more than 24 hours later
Most lurgies are like that. People respond differently including duration, severity and sometimes type of symptoms.
Diarrhoea/vomiting/related symptoms of gastro is often not attributable to the most recent meal. Often the dodgy meal is one of two days prior. Occasionally 3.
It is also possible to be infected together and exhibit symptoms at different times.

Covid PCR test negative so start a course of Clarithromycin today. Thanks for the nudge @drron .

Does anyone know any home remedies for virtigo? My wife woke up yesterday with head spinning and nausea. Maxalon for vomiting but head spinning is still happening. Will go to the GP today.
It's awful isn't it. I would lie on my back over a very large gymnasium ball with my head hanging down over the edge. Likely It's the ear crystals out of whack. Other than stemitil which didn't help me at all, just had to work through it. There are some interesting physio manipulations as well. Took some weeks. Had to keep grabbing hold of solid surfaces. It started when I turned over in bed and my world started spinning.

It will be essential to seek a diagnosis, obviously, as there are many possible causes and a definitive answer may take some time. (From personal experience, many months before a confirmed diagnosis of Bilateral Menieres.)

But, in the interim, it may be worth exploring the exercises recommended for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

Oh no. How awful. Having only had shingles once ,last month, I never want to experience it again. I can only imagine what you've been through having it three times in such quick succession. Possibly you haven't ever really got rid of it? ❤️

@maia200 think am a bit fortunate though, as no neuropathic issues 🤞

Have read an interesting medical journal article where post Covid (July) one's immune system can be compromised and incidence of Shingles has been noted.especially in over 50's - sad to say I'm in the 50+ cohort!

This is in this morning’s Oz online

Pharmacists have warned that millions of Australians face extreme medicine shortages and months-long wait times under pre-budget moves by the Albanese government to double the amount of medicines Australians can purchase from July 1.

The Weekend Australian can reveal the pharmac_ Guild of Australia emailed members on Thursday night, informing them the government had notified it of “their intention to allow 60-day dispensing”.

I’ve never had any problems getting two month’s supply at a time, for instance when I’m going on a longer overseas trip. The several pharmacies I visit have never batted an eyelid at my request to have two of each of my scrips at that time.

How have other people fared asking for two scrips at a time?

After first asking if they have enough stock for other customers I ask for 3 of the 5 on my script.

I haven't either but it's a sporadic request for me. I have been queried about filling a repeat script 20 days after the script had been dispensed. It was the front line person not the pharmacist. I suggested she read the dosage, I was taking three a day and the script is for 60. 😉. The pharmacists are fine usually, it's getting past the gate keepers.

I don't trust the Guilds etc. I'd suggest there is some kind of financial reason behind their issues.

As far as post Covid infections, there also seems to be a rise in other auto immune issues, in my case Poly myalgia rheumatica. I'll be interested to see trends in a couple of years. The question will then be if it's linked to infection or immunisation.

From another thread :)

what cheeses me off is the unedifying spectacle of the head of the GPs union (College, whatever) and the head of the pharmac_ association (ditto) desperately protecting their turf when the split of powers between the 2 professions is brought up.
