General Medical issues thread

Yes. It's the new protocols announced last couple of weeks. Shingrix now free for over 65 but recommended for all over 50 but at the high cost.

Pneumococcal shows a date for when I'm 70.
My understanding is neither vaccine is free for 65-70 year olds until 1st November. On 1st November the regime changes from Zostavax to the Shingrix.
Remembering the queues of people for the initial Covid vaccine I called my doctor's GP practice to see if I could pre-order, get on the list, whatever for the Shingrix vaccine as I have a GP appointment on Melb Cup day. The practice nurse says they cannot order the free Shingrix vaccine until 1st November and she does not know when it will be delivered. She points out that lowering the eligible age to 65 will put extra strain on supply and hence supply may be limited to each practice. Despite cancer putting me in a high risk group she says they have alot of patients with cancer and other high risk group patients who also need vaccinating. As she does not know when she will receive supply she will not start or even consider a list.

Ive always wondered why croup seems to arrive into the ER mostly at night.

BTW The usual Cough medicines are a no no in croup if they contain drowsy ingredients.
Isn't it a sudden drop in temp or even just a cold temp which usually occurs at night.

Yep and not just cancer patients but anyone with immunosuppressive treatment plus other issues. I got the impression the clinic had already ordered it because younger folk also get it, but pay for it so there should be some in stock anyway but not enough for the expected surge. Plus those who'd previously had the zostavax.

If you check your Medicare app it's already been updated with new advice.

She was perfectly fine when she went to bed. Sounded a little rough when I checked at 10pm but I just assumed her awkward sleeping position was the cause, and hysterical and struggling by 11pm/

They have Shingrex, but not the free Shingrex which they cannot order until 1st November.

assumed her awkward sleeping position was the cause
Possibly caught it from daycare
Sitting up best
Run the shower for moist humidified air, or a humidifier
The calmer the better

And most importantly and probably the most difficult:

thats the general consensus but Im not sure..

There's a difference?
That was my take away from the conversation today. They cannot order the Shingrex now to dispense free on 1st November. They can only order on or after 1st November. They can provide me Shingrex now but I must pay for it and further told me they could not offer to vaccinate me for free at my GP visit Melb Cup day as they needed to wait for the 1st November order to arrive.

Oh I meant her position was the cause of the funny noise she was making, not the actual croup event.

When my nephew was a toddler he had croup regularly and one night is was bad when I was visiting so we popped him in the shower and he accused us of trying to kill him and told his grandparents that several times in the next week

And his grandparents would have nodded sagely and realised that maybe their children had listened to them.

I know many won't agree with me but something had to be done.

On last trip to Thailand I bought 2 x 3 day supply of child antibiotics. Why? Because it's not easy to convince doctor in Australia.

Daughter has been sick 9 times this year from February-September. I think thats a lot. Most of those sicknesses were for weeks on end including one stint of 6-8 weeks with 3 different infections including RSV that my wife also picked up. Note that wife has picked up 3 of those infections and I've not picked up any.

So Friday night daughter not feeling well. Mild fever but coughing and sneezing but could not breathe while sleeping. Worse on Saturday morning with coughing and sneezing and yellowish phlegm. I decided time time to try the antibiotic that I bought. Yes I know.

So mixture of antibiotic, cough mixture and liquid Ibuprofen for kids and by Sunday night daughter was much much better and Monday morning she was able to go to schools swimming lessons that are on everyday this week. Today just a runny nose that is now clear which is great.

I'm buying 5-6 bottles of children's antibiotic next trip end of this year. It's powder that you add 60 mLs of water. I hate seeing my daughter suffer.

You know that they know more than you if antibiotics - or anything - is needed.

You seem to know that what you are doing is wrong, but you do it anyway.

When your daughters health is on the line, just stop being so tight and take her to see a doctor. Maybe then they will find out what’s wrong with your child and treat her properly so she doesn’t keep getting sick.
