General Medical issues thread

That sounds like the median nerve and ulnar nerve which is not normally due to mispositioning of arm during anaesthetic - typically that's just the ulnar nerve which gets affected - because it courses around the back of the elbow and is quite superficial to the skin so it's susceptible to external compression - the "funny bone" at the elbow is exactly the part of the ulnar nerve that gets affected.

Opposite to the arm with the IV suggests not from IV

Possibly due to pressure from whatever was holding arms in place. Its also rarely due to the blood pressure cuff going up and down

Worth asking anaesthetist what was holding arms in place.

Here is a Synopsis
Interesting. I keep getting woken at night when my hands also go to sleep. I woke last night and went to turn on the bedside radio and could not feel it at all for around 30 seconds until the nerves re-established connection. I assume it is happening in my shoulders and has to do with my sleeping position.

Did it become more prevalent after the chemo?
Yeah, I was trying to remember. I am not 100% certain but the left arm (hand) might be worse now. It's funny the only neuropathy I had during chemo was a triangle between the base of my index and middle finger on the back of my right hand that was completely dead. My specialist said no, it would be tingly. When chemo stopped all feeling returned.

It.s called a pressure palsy. nerve being compressed coming out of the neck or stretched in the axilla. I have had the m for many years. just shake your arm around and settle sooner. A problem though if both arms affected but that is rare.
Possibly weight loss and nerves in the axilla not padded as much.

It doesn't mean a disease of the nerves. If that were happening it is usually both sides and symptoms usually present all the time.

I have lost muscle mass in shoulders/neck. Less padding. Very interesting, thanks @drron

I'm not questioning your response but something is not quite right and if you think about it then you'll know what I'm thinking out aloud.

- We go hospital Friday morning 11/Feb/24. Urine shows bacterial infection. 4 doses of IV antibiotic
- Discharged Saturday morning 12/Feb/24 with script for Augmentin Forte and we start 5 days doses which finishes Thursday 15/Feb/24
- We go to GP on Wednesday 14/Feb/24 and doctor one more course of Augmentin Forte plus urine sample
- GP calls Friday 16/Feb/24 that urine is clear of any infection
- Second course of Augmentin Forte completed Tuesday 20/Feb/2024
- Friday morning 23/Feb/2024 suddenly there is blood in urine, severe bloating, severe pain in right flank
- Go to GP Friday 23/Feb/2024 and GP prescribes Keflex plus another urine sample
- GP calls Saturday 24/Feb/2024 confirming bacteria in urine but don't know which bacteria, wife responds to Keflex
- GP call this morning 26/Feb/2024 the bacteria is same bacteria as 2 weeks ago and is resistant to penicillin, Keflex and Triprim so prescribed Norflaxin

It does not make sense that urine sample on 11/Feb/2024 shows infection yet urine sample on 14/Feb/2024 is clear and urine sample on 23/Feb/2024 shows infection. I'm not a doctor but something is not right? Is bacteria hiding in kidneys? Or pathology didn't do their job, or the GP read results wrong, or wife picked up exactly the same bacteria somewhere else?

My concern is how did wife go from fine on Tuesday 20/Feb/2024 to almost needing hospital treatment on Friday 23/Feb/2024 with identical infection? Would be nice to have an answer. I'm not sure if I have any rights in asking for urine results from the 3 dates above to compare.
This is not the right forum for addressing these highly specific technical questions.

At the risk of getting my head blown off — this should be followed up with your doctor or specialist.

Exactly that happened to me. Took 4 months to settle down.

it’s been said before and ignored before 🙄.

It makes 100% complete sense.

It is often the case that there is no growth in the specimens while you are taking antibiotics even though the antibiotic is the incorrect one. A specimen that has no bacteria does not mean the infection is cleared. That comes with symptoms resolving and remaining so.

@JohnK A recurrent infection - one that comes back after a course or two of antibiotics require further investigation. Likely a CT-KUB, renal ultrasound, and a cystoscopy

That makes sense. I've deleted my post as irrelevant. Need to follow up with GP discussing above options.

All the best with medical followup for Mrs @JohnK
The content was not irrelevant
As doctors — we have unfortunately seen what happens if people don't seek advice by trained people and have appropriate work-up.
We were gently trying to ensure this did not happen to you
All the best

Took the Teen to Urgent Care in inner north Brisbane last Tuesday, after the school nurse decided she needed to go home with foot pain.
Dr said tendon issue, rest, ice, brufen (400mg ibuprofen).
Teen insists pain meds aren't effective on her (school nurse has suggested trying to see SKiP in the past, I need to discuss with GP), but had some slight improvement over the week.
Yesterday, back into sick bay and a call to pick her up, as her knee is now hurting and warm behind the knee. Back to Urgent Care, where I don't suitably explain there are new symptoms and feel like the receptionist is accusing me of not following up with our regular GP in the mean time.

Doctor is sitting next to receptionist as they don't seem to be too overwhlemed around lunchtime on Tuesdays, based on my 2 observations.

Anyway, Dr diagnoses ceullulitis with the knee, and provides some stronger pain meds. We have a physio appt tomorrow to see about the tendon issue. 🤞

any recent injuries or twisting of foot playing sports?
The Teen does not play sports.
She can't remember any injuries ... but this is also the same child who ~2 yrs ago presumably hurt her knee at kickboxing and required surgery after chipping a bit off the back of her patella.
So it wouldn't be surprising if she didn't remember a minor injury that didn't immediately cause limping.

Well i learnt something new and scary today. You can catch an illness by merely reading all about it on this thread on AFF. I have had problems with my legs and feet for many years. I have a peripheral Neuropathy secondary to severe spinal canal stenosis for many years. I also have Haemochromatosis which predisposes you to osteoarthritis, gout and pseudogout and I have had all 3.

However in the last 3 or 4 months have had painful soles of feet. one at a time or both together. Slowly getting worse. My neurologist agreed that it is probably due to plantar fasciitis or tendonitis because of the large increase in walking.

But 2 weeks ago had severe pain in the middle of my lateral left sole when I twisted it in the garden didn't worry and it was slowly settling. I was wearing an ankle support which made walking easier. But I noticed some swelling of the left foot which by yesterday was uncomfortable and had to take the support off. noticed the foot was a little red and now tender over the top of my foot. Last night in bed noticed my left foot instead of feeling like an ice block was warm. so took myself off to my GP today and he went through the proper differential diagnoses and suggested it was cellulitus which is what my diagnosis was. He then put me on the antibiotic I usually used for others.

But who would have thought I would end up channeling @JohnK . o_O

Sorry to hear but not sure if we should we laugh or cry?

I've personally known (and that's not to mention famous others) a number of people who have not led a life according to health advice and/or ignored doctors' and their loved ones' advice. Many have been fun and interesting (and sometimes maddening) people and even though it has shortened their lives they've generally been aware of the fact. I've missed them now they've gone but am pretty sure they'd have not been the same if they had complied-even though we might have wanted them to
