General Medical issues thread

I had outpatients appointment at RBWH. Dropped wife off at the front then went off looking for street parking. Parked about 700-800 metres away.

Couldn't walk it in one go so stopped about 200 metres short and had a 30 second breather. Made it all the way inside without stopping again but I could feel my body saying stop, stop. Managed to walk back to car without stopping.

Boy it's a struggle walking. I have to hold my lower back as that has the most discomfort. I did 8000+ steps in Sydney last Sunday but I was busy.

Was there last Wednesday (RBWH) as father-in-law is in the Orthopedic ward. He had 2nd toe on L foot amputated due to bad blood flow (he’s a diabetic) on Thursday. He’d had a couple of turns lately, collapsed at home and seems it was sepsis from the toe. Should be released in a week.

Hopefully it’s not going to affect his balance too much and he’ll be given an orthotic insert for a couple of closed toe shoes that he will now wear.

At least he had a number of windows that he could go and sit in the sun and see the Ekka lights at night.

Ask about a leadless pacemaker. Pacemaker without wires - the pacemaker box sits inside the heart not under the skin. Not medically suitable for everyone but its the latest and greatest.
I'm due a new one soon. Removal of pre-existing leads might be a problem, then there is my unique settings.

Likely just a box change is the least invasive. Changing to a new system usually not done unless there is a good reason to

Last Monday we drove to Albury where we spent 4 nights, then across to Bega, also around 500+kms. I have been absolutely buggered, I guess it is the driving has taken it out of me. Totally destroyed last Monday night and a fair bit of Tuesday. Then again on Friday afternoon when we arrived Bega, needed a sleep on Saturday afternoon. I understood I was meant to be doing better than this at this stage of my treatment. It has been 10-11 months since I finished chemo and my haematologist says I should be doing better but then in same breath tells me I was on a high pred. dose. Surely the pred shouldn't be affecting me at this late stage?
The girls have just gone out for a walk and have deliberately left me on my own telling me to have a lie down. It is early arvo now. Back to SYD tomorrow and I have already planned to do nothing on Tuesday.

How long were you on a high dose though?

Yes I know they change the entire pacemaker, utilising the leads in place.

No taper. You just stop taking at end of treatment.
Ok. I obviously don't know the ins and outs of your treatment but maybe this might not be helping.

Interesting article, thank you.
My symptoms from the article;
My glutes always feel fatigued and ache, hammies too to some extent. Quads used to be an issue but no longer. Joints...hips, knees, but these also ache alot after IVIG. Back also gets stiff and aches, not back pain. But it has been so long since treatment. I have been using this trip to see how I might manage a Europe trip. I would have to pace myself, maybe stay extra days instead of moving on.

Finally getting some progress with these long term issues. Have a phone consult with a Urologist in Sydney shortly (just got a text message saying they are behind, was meant to start now 😓) and an appointment with a neurosurgeon on Friday about this vertigo and aneurysm.

Are you dealing with the public system Himeno ?
I kinda take specialist appointments when I need them for granted...

Yes, and none of the urologists in Canberra do the stuff that they needed to do, so they referred it to Sydney.
There was some contact from Sydney about this back in Jan shortly after it started, but the referral was messed up (my contact info and someone elses name) and had to get fixed up. Also took some prompting from GP with new referrals and queries from the community nurses to chase it up. With the messages about the improvement and likely no longer require surgery seemingly getting lost somewhere in the process.

They were an hour behind. The urologist wants me to come up to Sydney for tests with the aim of seeing if they can find the cause and if there is anything preventing the removal of the SPC.
