General Medical issues thread

Yes I remember that - Katie Bender - quite tragic. I remember saying to Mr FM we should take the kids to watch and he wouldn't go near it - said it was dangerous and they shouldn't be promoting it as a spectacle. Quite accurate as it turned out :(

If I remember correctly the person that pushed the plunger, or whatever they do to set the charges off, won the opportunity in a local radio (MIX106.3) competition. Very sad for them as well, I think.

Next July it will be 20 years since it happened.

MrP took a week of puréed foods after wisdom teeth extraction. I think because he had twilight sedation the surgeon just went all out with the heavy duty gear.

Dr FM just had locals. I started her off with puréed apple and yoghurt (and jelly and ice cream for comfort) on the first day. Day two I made two soups - lightly curried pea and a broccoli and apple (my own concoction and its fabulous). Day 3 she was able to eat scrambled eggs and stewed apple, but not puréed. On the 4th day she flew back to Sydney and I had a Facebook message from the Qantas Club saying she had had pancakes and a boiled egg - very happy girl :).

*My wisdom teeth horror story*

I only had two, lower jaw, but my mouth is tiny, so the dentist wanted them out. Okay, whatever.
She said she could do it in the chair in the surgery - I insisted on a general.
After the surgery, she came to see me, complained about the bleeding (I did not know at the time that I have a minor bleeding disorder), then told me that because the MRI scans had shown the nerves wrapped around a hook-like root on both teeth, she'd ended up breaking up the teeth with a hammer and chisel type arrangement to get them out without leaving me with permanent facial numbness.

It was three weeks before I ate anything remotely solid again (and that was only because it was Xmas dinner). I developed an abiding love for my Sunbeam Oskar. And yes, I took a LOT of codeine.

Hope you feel better soon. Dr FM had 4 wisdom teeth out last week and it took 2 days before she felt things were getting better and another two to be over it totally.
Still don't feel right after 3 days. Soft foods ok but anything hard and have to chew on left side. Hopefully no more teeth worries for a long time.

Good grief - that is a horror story. Glad it is in the past :(

I had three wisdom teeth out under General. Bounced out of the anaesthetic like it never happened (general before that I was unwell for a good 4 days afterwards). Didn't really have much pain or swelling afterwards.

However I managed to get dry socket. Had to see my specialist's locum and that was a horrific experience. Whacked in local without numbing and kept doing it after I told him to stop, then he turned his back on me while I was having a minor panic attack, ignored me and was less than gentle in packing it.

Return visit to my specialist, he asked me to open my mouth and I couldn't and started shaking and in tears. He was horrified at what happened.

He referred me to a really lovely dentist and she's helped me work through my new fear. First few visits were not pretty and needed Valium - didn't help I had to have a crown! Every so often it bubbles to the surface and it affects me.

I was obviously lucky - had a couple of wisdom teeth out in the chair and no problems. Both children's experiences were fine as well though they were done at specialist dental day surgeries. Not much pain or swelling really. Feel for those who have bad reactions, must have been awful.

I'm fairly sure that I've strained a few intercostal muscles this weekend.

Either that or I'm having some rather weird localised angina.

No one replied to my earlier post, so assuming being "ill" from exhaustion isn't a thing. This week confirmed it, 97 hours and feeling OK. Let's see what this week brings!

Gave a nice box of Rocher chocolates to the GP today who was thorough enough to order an ultrasound of my neck (but thinking it was a thyroid issue) that discovered the DVT. Told him of confirmation of APS as the rheumatologist report hadn't come through yet. Thankfully she had written the diagnosis on a blood request form for April so all official.

He was rather delighted with his gift. I was rather delighted with his thoroughness.

When I had an ablation, I took a bag of hand knitted beanies/berets to give to the theatre staff plus the specialist and the world pioneer of the procedure, who just happened to be visiting Perth at the time and requested to observe the procedure. There were 7 berets/beanies and they all went rather quickly by all reports. My husband doesn't like to be left out, so he has an ablation booked for early in the New Year. I think I had better have at least 10-12 beanies/berets this time.

That is very kind of you. I have a GP friend who gets lots of chocos and wine at Christmas as he is a great GP. He doesn't eat or drink any of it. He'd love a book token. I help out 'reluctantly' with the chocos.
