Gift Cards at Supermarkets

The only effort I go to is to get each card down to under $10 and write that amount onthe back of the card. I take 3 or 4 each time to Woolies or coles and use them as part of a larger purchase.

I currently have around 20 cards with balances of under $10 so it will take a few trips to the supermarket to get rid of them.

But really it is a minimal effort.

Actually I used the Coles Prepaid Mastercards whilst recently in Bangkok and found that I got almost the same exchange rate (including the 3% currency conversion fee) that I could get from a money changer. So they get used up quite quickly - I did bring them all back to Australia though as its very hard to work out exactly how many Baht may be left on each card.

The woolies money appp lets you add the gift card to it and then will let you track the balance very easily.

I recently tried to do a low value payment to the ATO but their minimum on the securepay site was $10.

Yeah bit annoying that isn't it. I was trying to clear some low balance Prepaid CC's through the ATO and discovered the same problem

I usually use the last few dollars on the card to buy:
$4 coffee
Stamps at post office
Opal card top up at Woolworths
Split payment at Coles
Wicked wings at KFC (KFC does allow split payment)

May or may not be a stupid question but can any of these prepaid master cards etc ever be simply converted to cash? If I should search this thread let me know and I will do that if the answer is likely to be useful.

Can't be done. There has not been any suggestion that this was possible.

The woolworths app for WISH cards is great!! - updates realtime, literally seconds after the transaction goes through.

Woolworths/Coles always allow for multiple split payments - so good to use up all those low amounts

From Coles catalog - Collect 2000 BONUS Flybuys Points When You Spend $30 or More on Ultimate Kids, EFTPOS & Ticketmaster Gift Cards. Offer valid Wed 4 Jan - Tue 10 Jan 2017. unfortunately BONUS POINTS can only be collected once per flybuys household.

For the benefit of any Tuggeranong residents looking for a $100 EFTPOS card....

Coles Chisholm - I could only see $50 EFTPOS cards, no $100 ones.
Coles Tuggeranong - As per Chisholm, I could only see $50 EFTPOS cards, no $100 ones.
Coles Wanniassa (which used to be a Supabarn) - Bingo! I didn't count them, but there looked to be a dozen or so. As you approach the gift card display from the front of the store, they're on the bottom right-hand hook, behind a heap of $50 ones.

I am unfamiliar with the 'Ultimate Kids Gift Card,' (this week's Coles special $30 plus $5.95 activation gets 2000 Flybuys). On catalogue picture it shows JB, rebel, and Dymocks. That's a pretty cheap 2k FBs.

The $5.95 activation fee only applies to the EFTPOS cards, not the "Ultimate Kids". I went with a $100 EFTPOS card though, since I can't see myself having a use for the others any time soon.

It's a shame, as this time the only trick to getting 2k points was buying a card, I was actually aiming to buy a $50 gift card instead of $100 (same fee, same reward, just a few less CC points). Alas, only $100 were available.

Same same. Not that concerned though. Purchased with 5% discounted Coles voucher so not so bad given the $5.95 activation fee.

Only bad thing about woolies egift cards is you have to manually type in the code, it is so annoying!!! With coles you can just scan the barcode with stocard app.

Our Coles egift vouchers came in $50 amounts...what the....Saving 5% sure but hard work printing them off.
At least Woolies egift cards come in $500 amounts and sometimes you can get 6% off.

Sometimes you can get 10% off! Unfortunately I only found this after it expired but there was apparently 1 such deal pre Xmas.

Yes 10% has been out there for Woolies and David Jones. The Woolies ones are for a short time only.
