Also I have recently had some cards bought at WOW (not bunnings though) take 24hrs to activate

with gift cards from WOW ,they are only activated after close of business the day they are purchased

Coles have a new prepaid MasterCard out "coles brand" a little cheaper than the gift card this card costs $5 as appose to$5.95 in fees but you can still buy on amex 3 points per dollar I wish Woolworths would bring out something similar
What is the card value maximum ?

Strange, when I consolidated three DM e-gc into one physical Wish gc at WW last November, I used the GC at Big W ten minutes later.

sorry - i meant gift cards such as rebel, myer etc etc not in-house ones

I've been caught out with both DJs and Rebel. Bunnings instantaneous in my experience. DJs are generally OK paying with GCs via the instore returns if you see something you like

Yes. $5.

In store you can only get a $50 and $100 card.

But online you can buy a card with up to $1000 on it.

The $1000 card for $5 is a great way to meet the minimum spend required for a new credit card bonus point offer.

Wonder if platinum edge classes this purchase 1 or 3 MR points (regular vs supermarket spend). 1 point no doubt but wishful thinking :)

The merchant shows up as COLES FINANCIAL SERVIC HAWTHORN EAST AU, not a supermarket - but I'd be keen to know.

Not in my experience. Always been treated as a purchase on my Citi card with full points awarded. The Merchant is Indue trading as 'Coles Financial Services'.

Visa or MasterCard only not Amex

Yes, but useful for current cards such NAB Qantas Premium which comes with dual cards. Just spend on the non AMEX card to get to your minimum spend requirement to activate your bonus points. Makes a change from always purchasing gift cards which are usually very store specific.

So does this mean its a cash advance?

Shouldn't be.

Ah! Thought that i could use my amex to buy a $1000 giftcard at the supermarket. That wouldve been handy for extra points!

Used a Coles Group GC from the AMEX Myer deal to purchase an Ultimate Kids Gift Card ($30) at Coles with no problem.

I currently have an Ultimate Qantas Amex and want to buy some MasterCard gift cards to pay some bills that don't accept Amex. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to go about this? Reading the threads, seems I can buy a mastercard gift card in Coles.

Can I also do the same at Woolworths? I know previously I tried buying a mastercard giftcard at woolworths with a Wish Giftcard but it wouldn't work.

Thanks for your help guys.

Coles and Woolies both sell prepaid MC or Visa (not sure if they both sell each type) however there's often no value in purchasing the cards as they have around a $5 activation fee. The largest denomination gift card I've seen is for $100 so in essence you're losing 5% to activate it.

From memory the Qantas Ultimate only earns 1 QFF point per dollar at supermarkets. I guess some may value a QFF point at 5c to make it a worthwhile strategy.

From time to time as discussed earlier in this thread Coles (possibly Woolies) have offered bonus FB/WR points when purchasing prepaid cards which makes the strategy far more value as effectively bonus FF points offset the activation fee

What about using paypal instead? I do this frequently with bills that cant be paid using amex.

Thanks. Must have just been some issue at Coles end.

Worth noting that the promised phone call from the store manager hasn't come yet (and they've got my gift cards and receipts...). I'll have to chase up when I get back into the country next week. Quite a hassle!
