Thanks guys. I just assumed BKK would have their act together like SIN...clearly not.

No worries then, I'll order something at SYD duty-free, but it certainly won't be the more-expensive-than-retail Glenfiddich 30yo!

Cheers,
- Febs.

As a general rule duty free is the best % discount when buying lower value good, becuase the duty saved, one higher priced items the duty % is less, and when you add the markups of duty free store you can end up with a situation as you have just seen, duty free purchase is more than the retail best price.

True, although higher-priced bottles are typically still a lot cheaper in Asian ports (and when the dollar was good, LAX) than they are in SYD/MEL.

While I agree to some extent, I also disagree. Markups in duty free are huge, but your local bottlo will not sell 5 JW Blue's in a week, whereas in duty free, they probably sell 10/20/50+ per day.

Hence on some high end items, they are much cheaper due to purchasing power.

I did use the work 'can' happen, not that often does.
Almost always i have seen duty free is cheaper... maybe not by much as you would expect though thats all i was trying to say.

By cheaper as an example in Dan's today i looked at 700ml Belvedere vodka was $60, the same but 1000ml was 60 duty free so about 30% cheaper.
btw i highly reccomend Belvedere Vodka for those who like Vodka :D very nice and smooth.

The process depends on your next destination. If heading from SIN to Australia, the item will be packed by the DF check-out staff and retained and then delivered to the departure gate after the gate security scan point. If departing SIN for other destination, it just has to be given to you at the check-out in the tamper-evident packaging and you can carry it through the gate screening point yourself.

On my SIN-PER last month, I was simply given the goods in the tamper-evident packaging; it wasn't delivered to the gate. I carried it through the gate myself.

Strange !, what terminal ? I usually am OW, so i am terminal 1 most of the time. And even last week, delivered at gate.

Can't remember... I think it may have been T3? JQi SIN-PER

Is there a QP in T3? If there isn't.. then I guess it was T1!

Nah, only OW flights are T1 and JQi also T1 and QP/Flounge only in T1 :)
Interesting that they allowed that, maybe a change on the way or maybe the store was short staffed and they made some deal to allo wit just for that flight.
